I've been VERY lucky then...I've had Caesar dressing/salad and steak tartare made at the table many times with raw eggs...just love it!
I know I'm playing a crapshoot with raw eggs, but I sure love stuff with them. Dang!

Many restaurants use raw eggs in the Caesar salad dressing. So there is just more out the besides cookie dough that can get to you. Joe I am not sure how many restaurants still do this. Places like the Chart House quit adding the raw eggs due to the risk of food borne pathogens. (Back in the good old days when they made the salad at your table, I use to ask them not to put the egg in.) I know of one that does for a fact. We had dinner there for our anniversary in November. It's called Equus in Santa Rosa. The make their Caesar table side so I seen him break the raw egg into it. We have been going there for years and have never gotten sick from it. I am not about to give it up know. Joe

I cannot tell you how many raw eggs I have eaten in my life, it has to be somewhere in the hundreds and I haven't gotten sick from one yet. I have had food poisoning 6 times, yes 6 times, all from either crab cakes, shrimp or some other type of seafood but not raw eggs. I haven't given up seafood either, I do stay away from it for a while after I've gotten sick but eventually I'd come back and have a seafood platter or something like it.

The only food poisoning I've ever had was in Key West (sorry, Hank). It was after eating at Margaritaville. All I've got to say about food poisoning is, you don't die from it; you just WISH you could.......Jake

Jake you are sooooo right. I got food poisoning last year in Butte, Montana. It was caused by hash browns, of all things.

I enjoy breakfast at Hedo as much as any meal. Not sure why, but slopping on the eggs with bacon and a bunch of fruit just gets my day going well. I've never had a problem with the eggs, but wondered many a time why they can't cook them a bit more so they aren't so runny.
Now I have to stand in line for scrambled eggs?? Crap!!

Here in Oz, the eggs are for sale on a regular shelf in the store, just like the canned goods. I don't think they've been refrigerated prior to arrival at the store. We bring them home and put them in the fridge and have never had a issue other than trying to find them the first week or two here (since we were looking in the chiller). I have to agree with Tex, if they haven't hit the fridge, they are safe, if they have, keep them there. I too take the risk of eating raw cookie dough and who amongst you eats over easy eggs? Same diff.
Also, all the eggs are marked with how the chickens are kept, ie: Caged, Barn Laid or Free Range. I like this too. About 95% of them are brown eggs and the yolks are the brightest orange I have ever seen.

Did you know that "in general, chicken breeds with white ear lobes lay white eggs, whereas chickens with red ear lobes lay brown eggs." Source Years ago a friend who had chickens that laid pastel (blue and green) colored eggs. They were Araucanas and Ameraucanas. Modified to add link.

During the non-winter half of the year, we get our eggs from a neighbor who keeps a bunch of chickens that would have to be "free range". The taste difference between them and even store bought "free range" is amazing, normal factory produced eggs have no flavor at all to me.
Most of those eggs from the neighbor are the pastel blue or green shells. Our neighbor does not refrigerate the eggs she collects unless she knows they arent going anywhere for more than a few days.

Bob, I would bet that what is used for those scrambled eggs comes out of a carton rather than a shell. I do use egg beaters on occasion, and the liquid that I see with the egg beaters is very similar to the liquid at the Hedo buffet. Nothing wrong with that at all, I think the liquid is essentially water that was added during the processing to get the material homogenized and into the carton.

Lots of interesting egg safety facts from the USDA here: www.fsis.usda.gov/Factsheets/Focus_On_Shell_Eggs/index.aspThey do not condone storage of eggs at room temperature, by the way. They also (correctly) state that the egg came long before the chicken, which pretty much settles that conundrum......Jake

Does that mean the Egg is selfish and greedy to come first or that the Chicken isn't paying attention to its body?

This thread will be 12 pages before you know it......... Do you have enough towels to actually take a shower when the fire dies down? We have actually had 3 fires this winter in the fire place. I don't think the second one counts since we had to turn the AC on to make the house cool enough to justify a fire. Please consider this my token effort to fluff this thread and at the same time make a year end push to boost my meager post count.
