Game summary,
The Yanks got Fisted.... then, GOD DAMN YOU VALVERDE... then, I am sure that after the conclusion of last nights game, the Yankees probably would have been happier if Valverde had done his job in the 9th also.
After last night's game, I think it will be Detroit in 6... not that they really deserved it, but by definition someone has to win this horror.

They may not need 6. Yanks will be so demoralized at losing their leader, I expect this to be wrapped up in Detroit.

Jeter out. The man that gets hits when you need them. This is a massive blow to the team. Time for the other big bats and Arod to really step up.

No Jeter, no Mariano. Yanks just gave Detroit a free pass to the World Series so long as they keep Valverde out of crucial situations. He is to the Tigers what Armando Benitez used to be to The Mets.

Personally I think Valverde should spend more time practicing pitching and less time practicing his field entry routine... unless he is for a second looking for a second career as a June Taylor Dancer, in which case I say... move on, quickly

The night of the Oakland Debacle, I saw him sitting in the bullpen -- his eyeglasses needed cleaning, so instead of doing it himself, he handed it to the coach sitting next to him and *he* cleaned 'em up. Wotta guy! Didn't help.
On another note: did anyone notice during the game on TBS last night they put up a graphic of some All-Star/HoF ballplayers? The graphic included Willie Mays, but they misspelled his name! Willie MAYES! GRRRR!

It might be a bit premature, but a Tigers/Cardinals rematch might be in the offering.
Third time in my lifetime and the "rubber match"... it would make October VERY interesting.

The Giants can not win this thing as long as other teams keep hitting more Home Runs in your park than you do.

No one has ever accused me of premature stubhubbing before, but much has changed. My original calculations figured on Detroit leaving NY down 0-2. Now Verlander starts game 3 up 2-0. Jeter is out, and the Yankee hitters got just 3 hit from the low end of the Detroit pitching rotation.
Unless Verlander comes into the game like he's starting the All-Star Game, its hard to imagine the Yanks NOT being 0-3. If it get to that point, I think Detroit in the World Series is just about a cone deal.
On the other side of the ledger, yes, its early, but having St Louis playing against Detroit brings back so many memories of '68 when all the teachers brought TV's into the classroom so we could watch the games, it matchup goes very deep on an emotional level for this fan.
Verlander = Lolich Fister = McLain Fielder = Horton Cabrera = Cash Jackson = Kaline
That's all on the emotional level of course. In reality, whoever wins the NL will probably wipe up Detroit in the World Series.

If they play the Giants and if Detroit continues to hit the long ball they can win. If they play the Cards that's a different story. The Giants can still win this but if it becomes a home run hitting series between the Cards and the Giants, the Cards win hands down. What it really comes down to is. Who is hot when the series starts and if that team can maintain that momentum for four wins. ANY TEAM CAN WIN ON ANY GIVEN DAY.

Don't count out the Giants: if they can beat the Reds 3 in a row in Cincinnati, they can do almost anything.

I see lots of brooms in Detroit tonight for the sweep. The loss of Jeter and the poor hitting has all but done in the Yankees. There could be lots of off season ch-ch-changes in NY.

During A-Rod's down time, the NYC papers have been reporting that he's hitting on the girls in the girls in the stands. Good to see he's keeping his mind on the game.

With Hughes back in question again, even if the Yankees got to the World Series, they would probably be better off bringing up players from AAA to fill the roster than try to continue with the current roster.

Gordon, I would remind you that you about gave up on Detroit a few weeks back. That is one thing I like about baseball - you can be down and come back fairly late in the season (except for the Astros). Most of the teams can beat the best of the teams on any given day. Detroit has acquitted themselves well no matter what happens from here out.

Yes, I gave up repeatedly on them this year, and as the 7th place American League team overall in the 2012 regular season, they had no real business being in the playoffs... which really gives a true indication of what the league pennant and World Series is all about... $$$, and which team gets hot in October.
Dont forget that last year Detroit had the best record in baseball during August and September, they were on ripping through opponents, yet fumbled badly in the playoffs.
Given that and what you said Tex, all 30 teams should be in the playoffs to find out who, in reality is the best team in October.
