I'm going to pull for Tampa. They have never won a championship and Gabe Gross played at Auburn.

Just heard an oped piece on Philadelphia and championships... Phillies has not won the world series since 1929, and they are the only city with franchises in the four major sports that has not had a winner OF ANY KIND since the Sixers won the NBA in 1983... near the bottom of the last major recession and before that in 1967 also a recession year. THe hockey Flyers last won the Stanley Cup in 73 and 74, recession years. The Eagles are the only exception to the rule, winning the NFL in 1960, 49 and 48, relatively good years.
It would seem that Philadelphis winning is a bad sign in general to the nation as a whole, and the Phillies especially, win in dire economic times.

Philly's going down.
They haven't impressed me at all. Cubs swept them at home and beat them 2 out of 3 in Philly. Dodgers went from playing their best against the Cubs to flat out being FLAT.
psssst.... Cubs, Dodgers, would have had a better chance at beating the Rays.

Yep, I heard that last night on the pregame (though the announcer there got it wrong too, saying that 80 was their only World Series win).. it didnt negate the tone of the oped piece though... in '80 we were starting into that deep recession, Philadelphia winning is still bad for the American economy.

8 down and 3 to go
Tampa Bay Rays 4 Philadelphia Phillies 2
Two excellent games at the Trop. I don't think the Phillies have enough pitching to hold off the Rays in the much smaller park in Philly. It should be an interesting 3 games up there.

Remember that park is small for everyone and they will be playing on grass not a rug. So the bounce will be different. Also it looks like it could be wet and cold.

Even if the season ends for the Rays tonight they have no need to hang their heads. Philly has been in the playoff last year and that extra experience helps. Next year the Rays will shine for sure.
There is still one more to be won by Philly so until that happens there still in it.

Agreed Joe. And there is always next year (at least is doesn't seem at this point that the owner is going to sell everything in the off season like the Marlins owner did a few years back. THAT must have been pretty discouraging to be a Marlin fan that year, winning it all and knowing that the team is going to be traded into oblivion.)

I am thinking this game is gonna be on hold for about 44 hours. I am not about to hang around any longer and wait it out this evening.
Here is hoping that when I get up in the morning that the Rays have lived to fight another day. I am still liking their chances especially with Hamels now done for probably the remainder of the Series.

Here's what you will be waking up to nola.
For the first time in Major League Baseball history, a World Series game was suspended, as rain put a halt to Game 5 of the Fall Classic in the sixth inning when the field at Citizens Bank Park became unplayable on Monday night.
It will be resumed when I believe that weather conditions are appropriate," said Commissioner Bud Selig. "We can't tell you tonight when we'll resume. ... We are not going to resume until we have decent weather conditions."

NOOOOOOO, The Cubs will shine in 09.
The Cubs made out like fat rats in a cheese factory with that split.
Derrek Lee, Ryan Dempster, Cliff Floyd became Cubs. Lee and Dempster still with the Cubs, Floyd was traded to the Rays early in the 08 season.
psssst..... I would have been very pissed iffin I was a Marlins fan with that split.

Here's the official word. At the earliest. There is still a chance it could get pushed back even further. The Rays need to play right now. There is no way I want to see Hamels back on the mound in Game 7 if we can get this thing back to the Trop.

I've gotta give Dr. Bob major kudos for starting this thread way back on May 27th. The man obviously has an eye for talent.
It is unfortunate the Rays got stuck on 8 post season wins and could go no further. In looking back at the World Series I feel like the Rays may have drained themselves taking out the BoSox.
My hat is off the the Phillies. They did an excellent job and are to be commended as the 08 World Series Champions.
Here is to looking forward to Dr. Bob cranking up another Ray's thread in just a few short months.

Since the Cubs were "ram bam thank you mame" early in the playoffs. The Rays put a lot of enjoyment in my watching the playoffs. I'll be keeping my eye on them in the 09 season.
pssssst....... A great team youse guys got down there in Florida.

Pitchers and catchers report in just a few short days. Training camp schedules have already been posted in the paper on a couple of occasions.
Shall we start a new Rays thread for 09 or just continue to piggy back on this one?

The cement was only the destination, half the adventure is how you get there.
