Anyone with a name like "Dwight Errington Myers" would have very little cred to lose in the first place.

Unfortunate timing -- he had just been named Penn State's new football coach to replace Joe Paterno.

All the science fiction fans on this board, and none of us had Anne McCaffrey? Anne McCaffrey, ‘Dragonriders of Pern’ Author, DiesAnne McCaffrey, author of the “Dragonriders of Pern” series, has died. She was 85 years old. Her publisher Random House reportedly announced that the author passed away after suffering a stroke. McCaffrey’s books about a distant planet in which some inhabitants rode telepathic dragons to combat deadly falling alien Threads are considered seminal works of fantasy fiction. The books combined mythic inspiration, sci-fi and adventure. McCaffrey was born in Cambridge, Mass., and published “Dragonflight,” the first volume in her “Dragonriders of Pern” series, in 1968. “When is a legend a legend? Why is a myth a myth? How old and disused must a fact be for it to be relegated to the category ‘Fairy-tale’?” she wrote in the introduction to “Dragonflight.” McCaffrey’s 1978 book “The White Dragon” was a breakthrough in the series, and made the New York Times bestseller lists. blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/11/23/anne-mccaffrey-dragonriders-of-pern-author-dies/?mod=google_news_blog

I had a long tradition of reading to my daughter at bedtime, that lasted until she was about 10 or so.. just some dad/daughter time. Right after we finished LOTR we read this series. Fond memories and interesting storylines.

A sad day here in the Windy City. Maggie Daley was very beloved......Jake ****************************** Former Chicago first lady Maggie Daley dies at 68CHICAGO (AP) — Maggie Daley, the wife of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and a gracious promoter of the city's cultural and educational programs, has died. She was 68. Maggie Daley, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, died Thursday night, family spokeswoman Jacquelyn Heard told The Associated Press. Daley had been a reserved and dignified presence at her husband's side during his 22 eventful years as mayor. Heard said Daley was surrounded by her husband and children when she died just after 6 p.m. CDT. "The mayor and his family would like to thank the people of Chicago for the many kindnesses they've shown Mrs. Daley over the years, and they appreciate your prayers during this time," Heard said. When she first learned she had breast cancer in June 2002, Daley said she was shocked. "But you pick up and you move on. ... I'm not alone here. There are a lot of people who have experienced this," Daley said in the weeks after the diagnosis. The Daleys' daughter, Lally, had moved up her wedding from New Year's Eve to Nov. 17 so her mother could fully participate. The former mayor said his wife had a difficult summer, and a longtime mayoral aide said she had suffered setbacks and was not getting around as much as she normally did. When Richard Daley was elected to his first term as Chicago's mayor in 1989, he thanked his wife in his acceptance speech, calling her "the best campaigner in the family." She was with him at the September 2010 news conference when he announced he wouldn't seek another term. He left office in May 2011. During his time in office, Richard Daley would routinely tear up when he spoke about his wife. They had met while he was campaigning for the Illinois Senate and were married in 1972. Eventually, their partnership became a steady force for the city during his at-times turbulent two decades at the helm of the nation's third-largest city. news.yahoo.com/former-chicago-first-lady-maggie-daley-dies-68-024712108.html[elton_john]Now it's all over, Maggie Daley...[/elton_john]

I always enjoyed Hitchens and I'll miss him, although I have to admit that I was a bit late to the party with this guy. He first showed up on my radar back in 1997 when Princess Diana died; I caught him on some of the TV news channels trashing Diana and it really got my attention. I've been postponing a read of "God Is Not Great", maybe now's the time.

Time is running out! So far, Nola is still in the lead with four stiffs, Gordon and I are tied for second place with two stiffs each, and Tex and Anita each have one.
Of course, it's only December 17, and anything can happen! Come on, team!!

The year is over! And barring any delayed news of 2011 demises, these are the final standings:
#1: NOLA, with four stiffs. #2: BornagainDruid, with two stiffs and 12 points #3: Tex, with two stiffs and 10 points #4: Jake, with two stiffs and 7 points #5: Diva, with one stiff.
Hard to believe that's all we got all year. Regardless, congrats to NOLA on an excellent showing!.......Jake
PS - feel free to double-check my compilation. With no money on the line, I wasn't really all that careful in my totals, but I think I got it right.
