I thought I'd kick off the "Fall Colors" thread with some shots from around the neighborhood. The trees aren't turning colors yet, but the Fall vegetables are looking good. Yes, even in the heart of the city, we get some good old fashioned veggies at the local Farmer's Market. Okay, who's next?......Jake A peck of unpickled peppers...... A most sincere pumpkin patch...... Goin' out of my gourd!!.... These mini-peppers would be great on an Italian beef sandwich!.....

Hope you don't mind Jake but I was curious to see how the pumpkins picture would look if it was cropped tighter to hide the box they are in, and in doing make the picture more abstract by removing any clue as to what is going on with the pumpkins. The result is quite dramatic I think, and even makes you wonder if there are maybe hundreds more pumpkins in the scene that you can't see : Simon

I like it! And you are correct: it forces the mind to stretch the field of pumpkins on and on in all directions......Jake

Our trees aren't ch-ch-changing colour either so there aren't many colourful autumnal pictures to be taken yet. However, the offices we rent are in a converted farm building outside town and life on the farm is very busy right now as this autumn's onion harvest is underway. So I took these two photos today on a wet and miserable afternoon : Freshly harvested onions straight from the field being unloaded in the farmyard : The onions are hand sorted by Polish workers who flock to the UK looking for whatever work they can get. Next stop is the shelves of the major supermarket chains (for the onions, not the Poles) : Simon

So Simon are your eye watering yet? Actually the smell is quite sweet and very pleasant. Visitors have been asking us what the smell is and are surprised when we tell them it's onions. Simon

I remembered my camera last night but dropped it in the yard( I didn't realize I did) before we started to pick. I was lucky with all the trucks and equipment running around it didn't get smashed. Will try again tonight.

Thanks! They don't look all that yummy on the vine, do they? That's what a rain does to you 10 days before harvest. All those little dark ones are starting to rot. Here is a couple of more pictures; This is what it looks like after we pick it. This is the picking head inside the grape harvester. The bow rods shake back and forth and basically beat the grapes off. Joe

Yesterday was such a beautiful one that I decided to go out and take some fall photos. This fall has been so cloudy and rainy that this was the first real opportunity to get out and do so. Peak colors are right now, around the house anyways. The lake influences the weather here so much that "peak color" is essentially determined by how far you are away from the lake. Ten miles inland, the trees are bare right now. Where I live, three miles from the lake its peak now, along the shore, it will peak in another week or two. Anyways, the old pasture below the house, where our daughter's horse used to graze From the end of our driveway, looking up the hill, towards the lake From the other side of the valley. Our house is hidden but far left near the green pine trees. Lake Superior is just beyond the crest of the hill (actually an ancient sand dune). oops, just noticed the phone junction in the lower left, if I get the chance I will crop that out laterWell, that was yesterday... this is today. Good thing I took the pictures above when I did. Between the weight of the snow (1-3" forecast) and the winds (up to 45mph), most of the color should be gone by the end of the day... autumn colors are very transient, grab them while you can the driveway the backyard
