Hey, did anyone watch the two premiere episodes of "Battlestar Galactica" on Sci-Fi channel Friday night?
I taped them, fully intending to watch them sometime this long, cold weekend. But when I sat down to watch them this afternoon, they were just starting to air the original four-hour mini-series that was shown a year or so ago! So instead of watching my tape, I started up the tape again to record the mini-series. (I saw it when it first ran, but didn't remember many of the details.) I'll watch them all tomorrow, maybe.
So, who saw this show? What did you think? How do you campare it to the 1979/1980 Lorne Green version?......Jake

We don't get the Sci-fi channel on our cable network here so I can't help you compare them.
But I did watch all the original episodes with Lorne Greene and Dirk Benedict. For their time on TV I thought they were very well done and enjoyed the story line also.
Slight take off from Star Wars IMHO
Joe.

Yeah, I enjoyed the old version too. This new incarnation looks to be a lot grittier and meaner. The Cylons now can look like humans and blend in with the crew, and some are "sleepers" that don't even know they are Cylons. Yet.
There are more female characters now too (like Starbuck and Boomer), which some peoople have bitched about. Hey, they could make an ALL CHICK version and I'd like it even better!.....Jake

Interesting production techniques, I wonder how they get the guy with the handheld cam and autofocus out in the middle of space Still, very intense, definately not a kids show (which the original turned out to be after it waivered between kids and adults for a year or so), AND I get the sense that it is not going to be afraid to make the viewer uncomfortable about the issue of WHY (definate sense of that with the one 'human' robot constantly challenging the scientist on moral issues, sorry, I dont have character's names down yet. Worth watching!! Gordon

Okay, I'm slowly working my way through the mini-series on my tape (I watch TV almost as slowly as I read) and it is great. Tonight, I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD at one scene.
Capt. Apollo, the young hot-shot fighter pilot, is in a tough spot. The Cylons have just sneak-attacked the humans, reducing the entire race to a handful of survivors. Apollo is on a civilian ship along with the Secretary of Education, who has just learned that she is the highest ranking member of the government to survive the attacks, and has taken charge of the government. She orders a "rescue mission" of mercy to round up refugees and survivors. Defense, be damned!
Meanwhile, Apollo's father, Cmdr. Adama, is the highest ranking military official still alive. He is mobilizing the remaining forces to fight back against the Cylons. He finally finds and contacts Apollo via radio and tells him to join in the military mobilization. Apollo tells him he can't help with the military mission, because the new "Madam President" has them on a rescue mission.
Adama roars at him over the radio (and here's where I bust a gut laughing): "We are at WAR.... and you're taking orders from a SCHOOL TEACHER? ? ? ? ? ? ?"
Okay, maybe you had to be there.....Jake (also just a School Teacher)

I've never seen the show, but also found that part funny without being there. Would have been even funnier if he'd said something about "Just a Chick that's only a school teacher". ;D
Too lazy to look it up right now, but I sure hope the Sec of Education ISN'T in the chain of secession.

Secretary of... State Treasury Defense Attorney General Interior Agriculture Commerce Labor Health and Human Services HUD Transportation Energy Education Veterans Affairs Holy Crap Although in the context of the TV show in discussion, the show deals with a non-Earth human society, so their Order of Succession may be different, your mileage may vary Gordon

Geez, it makes Enterprise look like the Doris Day show! And this is a remake? You mean its like the old BG didn't even happen? Geez! My favorite episode was when they finally reach Earth, and find how technologically backward we are I'll never forget the look on the commander's face when they kidnap Apollo and Starbuck and the Galactica comes to save them.. "this ain't your daddy's Galatcia"...damn right..and I'm glad it ain't too!

I finally finished watching the pilot movie and the first two regular season episodes (of course this took me two weeks to accomplish, so I'm sure I missed two more episodes!) and it just got better and better. The camera techniques and editing reminded me a lot of "Homocide: Life on the Street" with lots of hand-held, jumpy POV shots with quick zooms (as Gordon observed above). I'll have to fire up the VCR and not miss any more eps......Jake

ARGHGHGHGGH!!!!! I just got a notice from my damn cable company. They are reshuffling the channels, and Sci-Fi is becoming a "premium" option. Damn, I can't afford to spring for a premium package. Can't afford the loss of productivity, that is! I could probably swing the double sawbuck or whatever it is each month, but not if I veg out in front of the tube for hours at a time and lose my job!
I was so demoralized that I didn't even bother to watch the season opener last night.
Gordon, didn't you mention that you download some shows from the internet? How does that work, pray tell? It might save me yet. Thanks!.......Jake

Here is a link to the site fsfa.zenith-net.co.uk/login.phpRegister and login. They had been asking about $5/month (through PayPal) to cover the bandwidth for the downloads, but that is pretty flexible, especially when there is not much new to download. Once you aante up, you will be given access to the 'Site Supporters' section where the downloads are. Enterprise shows were about 340Mb in size and in .avi format. I used Nero to convert them to a video CD so I could watch them in the living room... although without conversion I could watch them as is on my computer. Check out the site, I cant promise that they will have Battlestar next season, but its a good bet. Gordon I did see a poll there asking for opinion whether to

I use this torrent site www.suprnova.com to download movies and US tv shows. It involves a one-off fee and downloading their software. I've found it to be very good and, like Gordon, I use Nero to convert the files to watch them on the tv. Simon

OK Joe.. here it is in brief.
Adama was victim of an asassination attempt and is just coming back around. His XO took charge, then declared martial law (his wife MAY be a cylon, she returned to the ship under mysterious conditions). There is still an assult team on Caprica trying to get back to the fleet. The President had incurable breast cancer, and the VP (who is also a top scientist) has a mental link (purely sexual you understand) with one of the cylons.
Thats it, very briefly.

Thanks for the tip, Gordon. Unfortunately, my cable company moving SciFi to their premium lineup has pretty much knocked this show off my radar screen. I'm not interested to the extent of paying more money or downloading it every week. Maybe I'll catch it in syndication in a few years........Jake
