Anybody watching "Mad Men" on AMC? I just recently started watching it. AMC is showing it from the beginning (although I missed the first half dozen or so episodes).
I've seen about ten episodes now (end of Season 1 and start of Season 2), and I'm enjoying it, but I can't quite put my finger on why. The fashions and early 60s nostalgia are cool; some of the dialog is clever, and some of the characters are compelling, but nothing seems to be so awesome to make it such a critic's darling. Maybe I need to get deeper into it before I grok it.
Anyone else?

Just Started watching it on Netflix. We have seen 6 so far. It might be a better show if it had the been on HBO with some use of adult language, and adult viewing. The story line is good. I also like the 1960 styles. looks like those guys just drink and eat at work all day long.

It might be a better show if it had the been on HBO with some use of adult language, and adult viewing. The creator of the show was created by a former writer of "The Sopranos". He *did* pitch it to HBO; they passed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Weiner#Mad_Men

If you notice even the pregnant woman on the show both drinks and smokes. (know days they would put her in jail for that)

Battlestar Galactica was pretty good in that respect Joe. The ship's doctor was constantly smoking in the exam room, and just about everyone smoked at one point or another.

I haven't watched the Season Five Premier yet, although I did DVR it. I still have about five episodes from Season Four to watch first.
But I do finally have a theory about why I like the show so much: it is all about the quirky characters. I think this show is basically a reincarnation of "Twin Peaks." That is, it isn't so much about the story or the plot, but about the overall feel, the universe that it sucks you into, the alternate reality that is so seductive. That's my best theory so far, anyway.

In terms of how they utilize music (and obviously, I'm basing this on only having seen the one episode from last night), I find it to be very similar to "The Sopranos".

I finally caught up and watched the Season Five premier. I thought it was excellent, and funnier than most of the previous episodes, in a droll sort of way. Some of my favorite humorous lines.... (these are out-of-context enough NOT to be spoilers, I believe)......
Don: How old will I be when you're forty? Don's son Bobby: You'll be dead.
Don, dropping off his kids at the home of their mother and her new husband: Give Morticia and Lurch my love.
Artist dude whose name I don't know, after discussing a campaign for Heinz's beans and needing to visit the men's room: I've got tickets to the bean ballet. And the curtain's about to go up.
Pete, at Don's birthday party, after Roger showed up uninvited at one of his business meetings: Roger! I didn't know you were invited. Or did you just hear I was coming and show up.
(Harry is mocking Megan, Don's sex-kitten wife, not knowing she is standing behind him) Hi Megan!... Very funny....
Roger: Is it just me or is the lobby full of Negroes? Bert: The humor was lost on them.

Love the humor this season. Morticia & Lurch was my favorite.
I find it fascinating how the story line is chronologically in sync with actual events of 1966. The plot makes ingenious use of product placements, album/song releases, concerts, etc. to reinforce plot lines. Episode 2 does an excellent job of this.

A few weeks ago, the absolutely funniest scene ever occurred. The line that encapsulated it all was: Because he was caught with chewing gum on his pubis!! ...uttered in a stiff upper lip British accent and in all seriousness! This show rocks...

I have watched it several times since the first night. It has so many great nuances. I love Don getting up to close the drapes. And Roger is priceless. Definitely an all time top 5 tv moment for me

As much as I've been enjoying this show, it's painful to think how much better it would've been on HBO, as was originally intended.

Your loss. I can't imagine how diluted "The Sopranos" would've been had it not been run on a premium cable channel.

Adding a "shit" or a "fuck" to a show doesn't make it better. I can see how a crime show might benefit from looser standards, with violence and graphic images being important to the story. But "Mad Men" is about the sixties, and the mores and the zeitgeist of the time; not the mob and murders.
I can't imagine how it could have been better on HBO. Do you have any examples or suggestions?

Well, for one thing ... no commercial interruptions! Sopranos on basic cable has commercials forced in where none were designed to be (kind of like watching a feature film on TV); typically, TV writers build toward act breaks in scripts to account for the commercials -- shows on premium cable channels have a better dramatic flow to them because of the lack of commercial interruptions.

Again, a mistake. I watch the show as it's aired and follow my Twitter stream as it's on -- some of the folks I follow are "Mad Men" fans and they live Tweet during the show. There's a NYC journalist named Jen Doll who has quite a few funny/snarky live-Tweets during the telecast; kind of like a humorous running commentary track as they sometimes have on DVD's.
