... that the FL Gators can knock off the team that is described as the hottest team in the SEC, in the SEC tournament - Auburn?
The Gators desperately need to keep winning in order to make it to the big dance.

Gordon, football never ever ceases in the south. But in this case Carl is talking about the SEC basketball tournament in Tampa.

How so very true. Hopefully one day the SEC will be known nation wide as more than a football conference. I know the Gators won two National Titles in a row but the perception of the SEC is that if Kentucky doesn't win the SEC, it must be a down year. AU got a first round bye and plays the winner of the Florida-Arkansas game. Florida won Thursday afternoon and AU plays the Gators at 8:45 tonight. Presently AU has won 8 of it's last 9 and is the hottest team in the SEC right now. AU is 21-10, the Gators are something like 23-9, they are very tough and well coached.

The SEC is pretty well balanced, too. I really admire the Gators coach. He keeps his cool, is a good teacher, and insists on teamwork. Both of the years the Gators won National Championships (2006, 2007), they were somewhat inconsistent leading up to the NCAA tournament, so I'm hoping this year's team will jell. They looked more like smart, scrappy players against Arkansas.
Last year, with a young team (many of their championship teams went on to the Pro ranks), they were runners-up (I think) at the NIT. And next year they have a bumper crop of newbies coming in.
But you're right, Gordie - until recently SEC WAS football, unless you were talking about KY. Where I went to school - U of GA, they've never had a really good basketball program.
I went to seminary a few miles away from Lexington (U of KY). My favorite memory was the basketball cheerleaders doing the pyramid. But when the TV cameraperson shot the scene from the rear, all of a sudden we stopped seeing cheerleaders for the most part, and the majorettes at the football game half-times, and now get to hear analysts talk who don't really know much more than we do (without their charts and fact sheets in front of them).
I know Marge and I seem to see things quicker in the games than the so-called sportscasters and analysts.

Well, I gotta concede. Auburn deserved the win! As the announcers so kindly said, the Gators have some deficiencies. Particularly, I think, a big center or someone who can do something about the offensive and defensive middle. And we haven't had a real spark plug since Joakim Noah.
