Denice's lap top will not connect to the Internet. I have run all the windows repairs programs and it keeps saying Acquiring IP Address but nothing happens.
We have a comcast wireless router and this just started to happen out of the blue. My lap top is working fine.
Is it comcast or is it her computer? She has Windows XP.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Joe (who thinkx a 20 lbs sledge hammer would fix it just fine)

It could be a lot of things, can you plug it in via hard wire and see if it connects, it it does, I would say windows update grabbed a bad wireless driver. If it won't.....then it probably is a corrupt winsock file due to spyware or a virus.

No I cannot plug it in via hard wire.
She has one of the kids at her work that screw with these things and is going to ask him tomorrow.
Thanks

You might try going to Windows Restore and restore it to a previous configuration when it worked fine. The Restore utility will give you a calendar; just pick a date when you know it worked and revert to that. Might not help, but maybe it will......Jake
P.S. - if it doesn't work, tell her to stay off the internet and get back in the kitchen where she belongs!

Joe, I used to have this happen all the time with my wireless setup and laptop. Invariably, I had just returned from a business trip where I had used another wireless network.
For some reason, Windows refused to acquire a new IP address on the home network, always attempting to use the "old" one at the previous wireless site. I have no idea why.
I would play around within the "network connections" tab doing various things and at some point it would begin to work again, but I often couldn't tell why.
It used to piss me off something fierce!!
There was some setting I got to by clicking on one of the "advanced" tabs that would often help, but damn if I can remember what that was. Ultimately, I gave up using the home wireless system because of this problem.
..............Bob
PS: You might want to go into the "network connections" and pick your wireless connection, right-click and pick properties, then find the "Internet protocol - TCP/IP" or something like that, check it's properties and make sure "automatically acquire IP address" is checked.

The net result of that would be like issuing a DoS attack on YouTube -- there'd be so many hits on their server, *no one* would be able to watch the video.
