Anybody getting into these new, tiny, "netbook" computers that are getting so hot? One of these babies could come in real handy. They generally come with no hard drive (just a flash drive) and with Linux instead of Windows (although both HDs and Windows are also available), and are intended mostly for web and email access on the road. I've been looking at the Asus EEE and the Acer Aspire, but there are also others. Any experiences out there, you geeks?

No takers, eh? Well, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Acer Aspire One which is currently $328 at Amazon. Now I get to learn all about Linux! Might be hitting Robinhood up for some advice. Stay tuned!......JC

Hadn't heard of them yet here Jake - interesting... Of course, I don't have much use for a laptop myself. Must be the next big thing. Would go along with the "cloud computing" that I was talking about on an investment post.

Hi Colleen; the theory is, most of the applications you really need are now web-based (Google docs, web-mail, etc.), so you can get away with a computer with little more than web access. (Hence the name, "net"books.) So they jettison lots of unnecessary components (like hard drives, optical drives, ports) and make a smaller, cheaper, lighter machine. It doesn't replace your desktop machine, but is easier for travel.

I'd say it's a pretty good idea - I'd also say that the "cloud computing" investment might be worth a further look. We'll see.
Good luck with your new laptop!

I must have missed your "cloud computing" post, but a quick wikipedia look-up showed me what it is. Yes, you are correct; the netbook is designed precisely to take advantage of that concept.

I ordered the Acer Aspire One from Amazon, and it arrived yesterday. $325, free delivery, and no sales tax! (Fuck you, Blagojevich and Stroger!) It is a very sweet little tool. About the size of a trade paperback, runs Open Office, Firefox, an email program, and a bunch of other handy utilities, all over a Linux OS. No hard drive, no optical drive, no Microsoft products, nothing but flash memory, a bunch of USB ports, and a WiFi connection. Oh, and a VGA output for presentations. And a 1024x600 display, and a keyboard plenty big enough to touch-type on.
This thing is going with me everywhere......Jake

Current over/under for this in Vegas 4 1/2

I probably would take it to Hedo, it's small and light enough and doesn't look like anything worth stealing. But I'm not going to

Not enough horsepower for my taste.
But I have all that built into my phone, and it's bigger than most people would ever carry. I don't think I'll ever buy another phone that doesn't have WiFi, unless of course it get's dropped from all phones.
My prediction, the netbooks will get smaller and the phones will get bigger, until they meet somewhere in the middle.
