Okay I am not a computer wiz so help. I have a lap top that never leaves the house. I am think of taking it on a weekend trip and I need to know how to hook up the internet away from home. I have Comcast broadband here and it's set up for wireless all through out my house.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO to make this thing work away from home.?
Would I be better to get a service like At&t when away or what?
Thanks
Idiot Joe (if any of you ever need a vineyard sprayer calibrated or a grape harvest set up to pick let me know and I will return the favor.) ;D ;D ;D

Well, Joe, it's a broad question. A lot depends on details of your trip.
Are you staying at hotels? If so, you probably have no problem, as most hotels offer free internet these days. Just ask them when you book.
If not, you can probably hook up at "hot spots" like Starbucks or other joints. Some offer connectivity for free; others charge a small fee per hour. All you need (besides cash to pay the fee) is a wireless circuit in your laptop, or a small cheap device to stick in your PCMCIA slot or USB port. If you are currently connecting to wireless at home, you clearly have this capability already.
If you want to connect ANYWHERE (in your car, at a campsite, etc.), then you need a contract with a cellular provider. I'm not an expert on those, but they cost maybe $15 to $30 per month from your cellular provider. You also need some sort of antenna to plug into your computer.
Okay, that's not a definitive answer, but it's a start. Good luck!.....Jake

How old is the computer? Does it have built in wireless? If the answers are "less than 2 years" and "yes", it should be pretty simply at the places Jake mentioned without any more effort on your part. If its older and does not have wireless, then you need a cable or a Wireless Adapter if you will be in an area with access. Or go the cell phone adapter route if you want 'universal' access.

I just got a download from my team in the Temporal Studies Department. They caught a glimpse of the future Joe and it looks like you WILL be connecting while on vacation...

Thanks guy. My computer is a little over 2 years old. I wasn't sure what would be best but I think I am going to go the wireless route with AT&T my cell phone provider. On hook up anyplace seem to be the easiest for me.
Off to work .
Thanks
Joe

Thank you, Joe, for fixing the spelling on your thread head. Now if we could only fix the word "Definitely" in the Political section....insert snarky smirk/grin.....he he he.
PS: I'm glad you asked the question...I would've had no clue either.
