Now after all that I have just found out that the convention/trade show I was heading for in Chicago was moved to June 2-5 2008 and to be held in Charlotte!!!
Apparently it was announced late last year but I only just found out by chance Friday.
Now the big question is..Can I organise a trip to the states leaving in two weeks time and can I be motivated enough to do it!!!!
Damn and I was looking forward to a couple of weeks away from all the 'fun' of this year!!!

Oh, I am very carefull about mentioning you lot anywhere....especialy as a non resident Alien in the US!!!
Actually I only meet people from here in
a) dimly lit, smokey bar/restaurants with attractive singers (to distract patrons from noticing who else is there)
or b) seedy, pseudo tex-mex restaurants (where good fajitas and marguaritas are served)
On the other hand doing some web searches on "Charlotte" certainly found me some interesting places.....some of them actually related to the city where the trade show is. Others involving whips, handcuffs and even a transexual.....
Ozmale
PPS I must say however holding the show in Charlotte has gotta be a whole lot more interesting than holding it in Chicago...whoever he is

A few years back I was in Memphis at a convention and some of us went down to BB Kings on Beale Street for a drink or 20.
We met an Aussie that told us his company flies him to the U.S. twice a month to work accounts and make new contacts.
He was flying out of Memphis for home the next morning and he was in the bar for a night cap, as he put it. We all figured we were pretty good drinkers and the Aussie was smaller than any of us.
He drank us under the table. Several hours later he walked out of that bar and I crawled out(Pub Crawl). I learned my lesson the hard way about drinking with an Aussie. My lesson was, I can't.

Oz, I grew up just down the road from Charlotte. I still have family in the area and when I fly there rather than drive, I fly into Charlotte. It's a nice city, growing like crazy, but not a lot of Hedo like things to do there . . . very conservative part of the country. ..............Bob

I learned my lesson the hard way about drinking with an Aussie. My lesson was, I can't. Modesty permits me from saying much but QED (quod erat demonstrandum) Actually, ch-ch-changing my mind, I will say something. Reminds me of a Friday afternoon in Atlanta. Myself and another Aussie at the conference had been hearing about this bar where they had a "drinkers passport" promotion going. They had something like 14 or 16 beers from different countries, drink each one and get your passport stamped. Fill the passport and get a free t-shirt and beer stein. We had been listening to people all week discussing their progress and we were commenting (quietly and discretely to ourselves) about their slow progress. Come Friday afternoon, the other bloke had a flight out that day and whilst I wasn't leaving till the following day we decided to kill the time in the afore mentioned bar. On arrival we explained to the waitress that we only had a couple of hours and asked would it be possible to share a passport between us. She was happy enough to allow us to share a passport between us but didn't believe we would complete the passport in the time we had (this puzzled us greatly at the time). Well to cut a long story short, some 2 hours and 7 or 8 beers later (each) we left the bar one of us with a t-shirt and one with the stein. We also left an amazed waitress at the bar! (Come on....it was only 7 or 8 beers...thats only 4 in an hour or one in 15 minutes - thats not a lot of alcohol by any standard, surely?) Now this is a lot of beer.....From Wikipedia Entry on "David Boon" an aussie cricketer of some renown... Boon achieved much fame and notoriety for consuming 52 cans of beer on a flight from Sydney to London[9] before the victorious 1989 Ashes tour that saw Australia regain the trophy after five years of English dominance; the previous record had been held by Rod Marsh, who it is believed consumed 45 cans, although there is conjecture as to whether Marsh actually finished can #45, and some believe his attempt only equaled the record of 44 cans set by Doug Walters. Another passionate report of said record claims Boon finished 54 drinks totalling around 19.5 litres of beverages @ 5% alcohol (per 375ml serve), the majority of which consumed at such an altitude that the effects of the alcohol were doubled [10]. Boon is often jokingly referred to as the "Keg on Legs" because of his legendary drinking exploits and dogged, iconoclastic batting displays. He is a unique interview guest, often giving short, clipped, amiable answers to every question.Regards Oz

I was just thinking... I have only met Australians while drinking and to a man they were all excellent kissers.
Now they may had made this up, but the most memorable bunch I ever met was at Mardi Gras several years ago. They taught me about Aussie rules pool - if you miss a shot you get an extra chance. I made the best shot I have ever made in my life while drinking with them - behind the back 8 ball corner pocket after at least 3 Hand Grenade (which are mostly grain alcohol and melon liquer).
Have fun in Charlotte, NC is a beautiful state.

Well, I have air line bookings to Charlotte on the 1st and a ticket home from SF on the 13th.
The show must be going to be well attended cause I cant find a hotel room in Downtown Charlotte for love or money! I will do it the old fashioned way tomorrow morning and ring the hotels direct and ask for in house reservations. They might take pity on me cause of the old accent!!
Also fired of an Email to Denny to see what vacancies are like @ H2 from the 6th (fingers crossed).
The best part of all this is not visiting a new city (Charlotte) or returning to a city I haven't seen for 15 years (San Francisco) or even getting back to H2....Its that the wonderful Aussie Dollar hit 95.5 cents US this morning - a record since our currency was floated! I can remember one trip to Chicago where it was 1 AUD = 0.50 US!!! Ouch that hurt. Drinks are on me!!!
(Oh yes and I just found out there are Frys Electronics stores in the general San Francisco area - My favorite Toy Store!!
Regards Ozmale

Also fired of an Email to Denny to see what vacancies are like @ H2 from the 6th (fingers crossed). FYI: US Airways has a direct flight from Charlotte to Montego Bay daily. They also fly direct from Charlotte to San Fran, or used to, but pretty sure they still do. usairways.com .........Bob PS: if you get bored, usairways also flies direct down here to Tampa. We have plenty of room.

Thanks for the info Bob. I'll at least wave as I fly over you (says he having checked, but not that well, the relative positions of Charlotte, Tampa and Montego Bay on Google Earth). If the conference is a real waste of time.....
Well I managed to find a nice hotel in downtown Charlotte by doing the old ring the hotel direct routine even though the net and the hotel's central reservations people said it was full so thats fixed.
Looks like DennyP can get me into H2 from the 6th to the 10th of June too! Whats the place like in June. Any chance any TNMC'ers will be around then? I have gotta meet more of you than just Jake and Simon! (if they haven't warned you about me that is......)
My other visit was October/November. Busy? Wet? After that I will be in SF for a few days and home. Time to talk to Andy about SF...
Oh yes, and sorry Jake but it doesnt look like we'll be sharing any drinks this trip - will you take a rain check?
Oz
PS and before anyone says it...I know its only 4 nights at H2 and not long away but 2 weeks away from all and sundry here is about the best I could manage on such short notice! (And some of the trip has to be work since it is a work trip!!)
Edited to add:- Just noticed 500 posts!!!
