Does anyone here have any experience with open source office suite software (such as OpenOffice ) ? If so, how well does it do the job, any operational issues, final recommendation?

I haven't used OpenOffice, but here at work, we occasionally use Google Docs, which we have found useful for collaboration and also if you need to access/edit your documents remotely.

I've used Google Docs a little bit. It seems pretty straightforward.
Why do you ask? Can't get your unlocked bootleg version of Microsoft Office to work under Vista?

I use both open office and google docs on a regular basis, unless you need to use some of the more advanced features of the Microsuck office suite, Open Office works great. I have built some pretty complex spreadsheets in Calc (OO version of Excell) and they work fantastic.
I am a BIG BIG proponent of Open Source software. That website I showed off in the Generally Speaking Forum was ENTIRELY built with Open Source software and is hosted on a Linux server. I used GIMP to edit the photos, Filezilla as my FTP client, Joomla! is my CMS, all free Open Source software.

Good to know, Robin Hood, thanks. In my opinion, there are three things in life that should always be free: Parking, Sex, and Software. Of course, in a pinch, we will pay for any of them, but we'd always rather not.

Why do you ask? Can't get your unlocked bootleg version of Microsoft Office to work under Vista? Close. I adopted WordPerfect and QuattroPro WAY back in the late DOS era, and have almost never used Word or Excel. I had to shitcan my 7 year old laptop a couple week back. Bought a new one (Dell m1550), sans Micro$oft Office, and have been debating how to populate it with software, since I have a clean break from the past. Just exploring options, and this seemed like a natural since, like RH suggested, I am not really a power user in this department.
