So HELP me GOD!!
I recently trashed VISTA and reinstalled XP as many of you know. Today, I installed a new program and had to "reboot" for things to take effect. That's when I got this fucking problem where my mouse cursor goes wild and I can't control it. I spent 3 friggin' hours Sunday trying to fix it, doing everything from loading windows from my CD to using safe mode to start things one by one, with no luck.
I loaded some "verify.exe" program that suggested I had some IRQ conflict. Thank you very much!!
Then it dawned on me. The ONE variable that was the same between the VISTA and XP install was my weather station hardware hooked to my COM1 port.
Pull plug on weather station, and all is well!!
Now, I have to find out why my weather station is causing an apparent IRQ conflict with my mouse. As long as I unhook the weather station when I boot up, I'm ok.
Fucking computers!!
Then Rhonda has to say, "uhm, do you REALLY need to know what the temperature is outside?"
YES!!!, Dammit!! THESE things are IMPORTANT to a geek!!
Jesus!!

Interesting issue Bob. Cant say that Ive run into that problem at all. Have you contacted the weather station hardware manufacturers yet to get their take?

You could hang a thermometer outside the window.

Now, I have to find out why my weather station is causing an apparent IRQ conflict with my mouse. It's interesting that your weather station program would be using COM1 as that's the traditional serial port used for pointing devices (as you are now well aware); dial-up modems used to default to COM2 so there would be no conflict. The conflict is due to the fact that you've got two devices competing for the same resource simultaneously. One thing you could check is to see if either the weather station software or your mouse driver are configurable -- if so, set one to a different COM port (I believe most systems have up to 4, but it's been a long time since I've done this and hardware has changed quite a lot, as I've learned with the new Dell system I recently bought). Another possibility is to see if you could use a USB port for your mouse; you shouldn't have an interrupt conflict there. You should be able to pick up a relatively inexpensive adapter (some pointing devices come with them at the time of purchase, so you may already have one). I will now accept one yellow card as penalty for actually attempting to provide serious advice.

Do they still even make serial port mice? I just assumed that those went out when the PS2 Mouse Port got invented, and even THAT went out with the USB mouse.

I have an old computer that I still use for odds and ends at the house on occasion. The mouse went out and I was able to replace it from ebay for about 2 dollars. I think the way I finally found it was to search for serial port mouses. Go figure
