Unlike Simon, we dont have 9 TV's, but weve been upgrading the ones we do have.
I just purchased a new TV for the living room. Replacing a 27" Panasonic CRT dating from 1994 with a brand new 46" Panasonic 1080p plasma screen. We are also springing for a Sony BluRay and 5.1 audio setup to go along with the screen. We checked out the LCD/plasma tradeoffs at the local electronics shop and decided that the higher contrast ration was worth and care to avoid burn in that we might incur (rarely have static screens anyway.
We got the new model 85U that Panasonic just introduced. The entire package was just over $2000. Delivery will be next week. Reviews to come (I will have to get some bluray disks and HD satellite service before I make a final judgment on whether it was worth it).

As far as HD channels is concerned, see if your satellite service carries the Mojo channel; it's become a favorite of mine.

Mojo's "Three Sheets" show is a lot of fun -- in fact, they have a new season starting tomorrow night.

Regrettably it seems that none of the satellite delivery systems carry Mojo right now. Oh well, I will keep an eye out for it in the future

Too bad, but I'm given to understand that the satellite providers have tons more HD channels available than cable (or at least my provider, Time Warner). So, you'll still have plenty of other HD programming to choose from. I believe the Dish network absorbed much of ZOOM's HD channels when they went out of business a while back.

I currently have Dish, and am going to be researching packages this evening. They claim up to 70 HD channels, but whats available, and for how much will be the big question. I do know that with my current 200 channel package I can get 21 HD channels for another $10/month, which is not bad at all.
I am probably going to spring for the Dish DVR, since my TiVO wont do HD, and its never really played well with Dish anyways.

You mentioned a 5.1 audio setup -- are you directly connecting that to your DVD or did you buy a HTIB or a separate A/V Receiver ?

Gordon, I have Dish Network hooked up to my Samsung LCD HD TV. There are plenty of HD channels, more than I can look at. I also use the Dish DVR (you need the HD one) and it is the way to go. You can hook up an external hard drive to the DVR and store your movies there as well as on the hard drive in the DVR. HD movies take up a WHOLE lot of space, however.
I have not yet figured out how to take the movies stored on the external drive and burn them to DVD. The external drive supposedly will only work with the DVR when you hook it up, though I have not tried to hook it up to my computer to see what would happen.
All in all, I've been very happy with Dish and the HD channels. I also get the local channels over the air in HD, which is pretty cool as well. Dish has the local channels on satellite, but not in HD. If you have any local channels transmitting in HD, you're gonna need an antenna on your roof to pick them up in HD.

Unlike Simon, we dont have 9 TV's, but weve been upgrading the ones we do have It's eight TVs. Six in the house (sitting room, kitchen, kid's playroom, my bedroom and both the girls bedrooms) and two old portables, one of which is 23 years old but still works, in the garage. Have fun with your new set-up. Simon

Check-out this site: www.hulu.com/three-sheetsLooks like the current season's episodes and past season's episodes have been uploaded here, so you can catch up on the old shows! BTW, this site looks pretty cool -- it appears that you can watch both TV & Movies (classic and recent). Maybe I'll post a link to it elsewhere.

Today I was just adjusting my outside TV antenna so I could pick up the local HD broadcast of the Master's Golf this weekend when I noticed that the local channel was also now on the satellite in HD. I'd never seen that before! Just a bit ago, I got an email from Dish Network noting that our local channels were now provided in HD, whereas before they were just in standard definition.
Cool!!

I guess I'll just have to come back in June to watch it. I can surf the site but I can't watch any shows or movies. It's the same with most US TV stations when I've tried to watch stuff online. I assume it is the same if you try to watch content from British TV stations such as the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ Simon

Even our biggest local channel out here in the sticks (Tyler/Longview Texas) is in HD now. You get spoiled quickly. We use Direct TV with a 60 inch Sony LCD HD. I had to ch-ch-change the bulb on it a few weeks ago ($150 with me doing the work)
We will get a blue ray soon but I hate to have to spring for a new porn collection.

Our one 'local' US station is 80 miles away and ever since TV tuners went digital in the late 80's we cant get a signal to come in. With the old analog tuners, we could get a very fuzzy picture but at least we could watch it, and we got 2 stations from Thunder Bay Ontario, across the lake. In the late 80's the tuners went digital (not the signal of course), and you either got clean reception, or you got nothing.
TEX... dont worry, any bluray machine you get now should be backwards compatible with DVD... unless you porn is VHS, then you should probably upgrade anyways

Almost all of the pieces to the new TV puzzle are in place. The new TV is gorgeous (though Ann keeps telling me to wipe my fingerprints off the screen all the time). The Sony speaker system is awesome with kickass bass, ran the first Bluray Disk through last night and the difference from my DVD is obvious. The last element gets installed tomorrow, the HD satellite dish receiver (Dishnetwork with built in hidef recorder). With that, I figure I should be set for 7-8 years at least before the next up grade is needed.
