Went to do a server ugrade for a Wal-Mart store. Everything was going great UNTIL it came time to replace the CMOS battery on my LAST server out of FOUR. All new hardware is in place, all new software is installed, replace this damn battery, button it up and run the image CD. In otherwords I was about 4 hours into a 4 1/2 hour job. Guess what happened the little fuckin keeper that holds the CMOS battery in place breaks, so I call the Wal-Mart support guys. I have to back out of the upgrade, because without that server the upgrade isn't happening, so 4 hours of work went right down the shitter, and add 4 more hours for backing out of the upgrade. So I now have 8 hours into this project with ZERO fuckin' progress. At least I will get paid for my time, I just hate spinning my wheels. I have 4 more of these upgrade to do over the next 2 weeks, I hope they go better than this one did.

Guess what happened the little fuckin keeper that holds the CMOS battery in place breaks, Let me ask a stupid question. You don't keep any back up parts just in case? I mean if you are going to ch-ch-change the battery wouldn't you have extra keepers on hand just incase one goes south? Sorry about the tough night. Joe.

Most motherboards (remember when IBM tried to get us to use the "planar" board bullshit?) are 4-6 layer PCB's with the retainer clip soldered through all layers. I have NEVER successfully replaced one as the heat from the solder gun typically affects the internal layers and internal leakage of the solder into the layers almost ALWAYS shorts one or more out.
Chunk it!

Actually it is pretty rare for these things to break, I have only broken two in four years. There is no replacing just the keeper, it is a whole motherboard replacement when one breaks, and I can't keep IBM server motherboards ($200-300 each) in stock, I would go broke. This was just one of those things that decided to go south on me all at once.

And, this was a contract job and the company supplied all parts, all I was supposed to take onsite was my tools and my winning fuckin attitude.

my winning fuckin attitude. I bet that took a shit when that keeper broke? Don't know much about computers except how to fuck one up. Didn't know the keeper was part of the motherboard. I know what you mean about keeping extra parts instock, it gets expensive. For my grape harvester I have about $8000. of back up parts in stock just in case something breaks. Joe

I hope a few of them are squabulators. They tend to be the first to go.
