I have been getting quite a few questions here lately about differnt computer related stuff, so here is what I am going to do. I am going to put some stuff together and post it, maybe Jake can make it a sticky.
Here is what it is going to contain.
Info on Virus protection Info on Spyware protection Info on some things to make Windows run better. Info on what the "real" minimum requirements to run Windows XP are
So if anyone has any suggestion on stuff that could be put in here let me know.

BTW, most of the other computer shops in my area absolutly hate me, because I tell my clients the truth, and don't keep nothing back. I prefer educated customers as to ignorant customers, IMO it makes for a better client relationship. In otherwords I don't just fix their problem and send them on their merry way, I spend some time with them and teach them some things that will help keep them safe. Is it working? I think so, my business is BOOMING!! I am stealing customers away from the other shops in the area at a very fast rate. If things keep growing at the rate they are right now, I will have to put on another full time tech come spring. Here is the cool thing, I am starting to see repeat business now!

I am a big fan of Spybot, AdAware, and Zone Alarm. In addition, our computers sit behind a router hardware firewall as well. What are the chances someone will ping my hard disk and cause a floppy failure?

Bob, if you like Zone Alarm you would love the firewall offered by Sygate, it is an enterprise quality firewall, it stops EVERYTHING DEAD!! I am a hacker, and I try all the time to find weaknesses in differnt software, Sygate DON'T have any that I have found. You can bust into a computer protected with Zone Alarm by feeding it fragmented packets.

Dr. Bob, I concur with Robinhood on this one. Zone Alarm has an issue with Stream (ACK flood) attacks on port 137 and 139, and also has issues with not recognizing "targa3"attacks (tiny fragmented packets of random IP protocol and random options). While it will usually suffice to protect a home-network, there's no way I would depend on it in a corporate environment. A good article for the curious is located HERE .

Dan you would love what I have set up here at the house for a firewall, I have an old P2 box 128MB RAM with 2 NICS running Linux Smoothwall, best hardware firewall I have ever seen. I have had several different guys I know try to break in all have failed. I have set up this exact system for several customers, and all have had great luck so far. Nice thing about Smoothwall, it is easy to configure, and VPN's work flawlessly with it.
The price is right too, I can find old P2 and P3 boxes all day long for less than $50 and the software is FREE!!

What are the chances someone will ping my hard disk and cause a floppy failure? To be honest, the first time I read this, I sat there for a second going, "wait a minute, you can't ping a hard disk. You ping a NIC", then it dawned on me, I guess that makes me a total geek.

Well I have you know, today when nobody was looking . . I opened my CPU and spread it as wide as I could. Then very gently, I took my index finger first to the top of the slot, and then to the bottom, pushing gently; fully opening the locking levers, releasing with a warm sigh, the 256MB DDR RAM waiting to be freed. Then, (are you ready for this), I took two fingers and gently held the 516MB DDR pushing just hard enough into the opened, still warm waiting slot until the levers came together as one. Closing the CPU, it sighed in relief now able to reach its maximum RAM of 1 Gig.
Karma me, baby.
