I don't get it either. I have an ordinary mp3 player which is very handy. Basically it is just a new and improved version of a walkman, smaller and doesn't skip and holds about two hours of music. But I don't understand why you would need to carry 100,000 songs, or whatever it is, in your pocket!.....Jake

I've had an iPod for three years (a first-generation 5GB and now a 4GB Mini). Love 'em.
Figuring most songs to be about 4MB, that's 1,000 songs for the Mini.
Like with digital cameras, don't overpay for what you don't need. (For example, if you just shoot for the web and make small prints, a 4-megapixel cam will suit you fine.)
With portable music players, same deal.
Your storage options (and, obviously, price points) are 256MB, 512 MB, 1GB, 4GB, 10GB, 20GB, 40GB.
I didn't need to hold 10,000 songs, but I wanted more than the smallest models hold, so I wouldn't be going back to the computer to replace the music.
I went with the Mini because I take it everywhere. My main modes of transportation are my feet and subways. It's a great gym companion, and small enough to fit in shorts pockets on bike rides. So, yes, size matters.
If I were to use it only in my car, on a plane or at the beach -- where I can just place it down, rendering size and weight irrelevant -- then I would have bought a competitor's model, saved a little cash and even get more storage space.
I cringe thinking back to all the money I spent on a car CD changer, Walkmans that ate batteries, portable CD players that skipped. The iPod supercedes them all in every way (including, um, ability to load pilfered music into them).
