Try this test: www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/My results: Download Speed: 3027 kbps (378.4 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 559 kbps (69.9 KB/sec transfer rate) kbps is thousands of bits per second, KB/sec is thousands of bytes per second (where a byte is eight bits). Mine is nothing to brag about, but it's nice to have actual data.......Jake

First test:
download speed 16653 bps (2081 Kb/sec transfer rate) upload speed 1389 bps (173 Kb/sec transfer rate)
Second test:
download speed 16429 bps (2053 Kb/sec transfer rate) upload speed 1389 bps (173 Kb/sec transfer rate)
I had to test mine twice because I didn't think it was accurate after looking at the other posted speeds. I thought my connection seemed a lot slower but realized it is probably my machine which is about seven years old and I'm running PC-Gillian Security Software which takes up a lot of memory. So, even though the transfer speeds are there my computer is probably not able to keep up with these speeds.
Any suggestions ?
My subscription to PC-Gillian runs out in two months and Com cast offers McGee for free and I have been thinking of trying that to free up some memory but I do enjoy the protection PC=Gillian provides.
Hank
Edited to add:
I went back and looked at my control panel and I think this is probably were I'm losing it: Compaq AMD Processor 1.30 GHz, 348 RAM
I'm not very computer literate and am not sure if I'm even looking in the right direction ?

My results on ADSL :
Download Speed: 963 kbps (120.4 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 324 kbps (40.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
I read an article the other day that said the UK is ahead of the US on actual broadband take-up, but behind on speeds. Looks like they may have been right.
Simon (who is going to take the test again tomorrow at work to see if there is any difference in the results)

Download Speed: 6881 kbps (860.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 491 kbps (61.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Road Runner cable here. I think I will check with DSLReports and see what speed I get there.
I also recently canned McAfee. I have used it for years, but the last upgrade turned my virus checker into an "internet suit" that took over all aspects of internet computing and slowed things down greatly. Moreover, there was not way to simply exit the program. It ran no matter what.
My new computer has Norton's full-service internet suit, but I have everything turned off except virus checking. Since it was free, I'll use it till it expires, then probably switch to a different one.

Edie
The variation depend on a lot of things, but mostly on the traffic level along the route your message (the test packet) takes, which may be a VERY circuitous route, and server load at the far end. So you can expect a pretty good variation depending on the test server location, day of the week, and time of day

Gordon is correct, and it is especially true for cable internet, where you share a "loop" with a number of neighbors. How many of them are on line at a given moment will have a large effect on your speed.
