The Manitoba women won the Tournament of Hearts (Canadian Womens Championship) with a shot that is being called by some, one of the best final shots ever in curling history (equivalent to an out of the park grand slam home run with two outs, bottom of the ninth, down by 3, last game of the World Series... except there is NO ONE on deck behind you). Video of shot, is the first listed under More Video on this page... www.cbc.ca/sports/curling/content/video.htmlEnjoy Gordon

It's all about where you grow up Joe. I used to watch curling as a kid. It was on TV every Saturday morning. Cable TV wasn't invented yet so there were only a few channels to chose from . Hell, I think that color TV had already been invented but we didn't have one. Why do you think that so many great hockey players come from Canada? There is a hockey rink at every public park. All you need up there is a little water and a few wooden boards for a hockey rink. I was amazed at what people paid for ice time here and at the ungodly hours that they rented it.

likewise for me... growing up in Detroit, curling was on Canadian TV all the time throughout the winter. After that it was just a matter of actively wanting to participate. I did that in my 20's when I moved to Madison Wi to go to grad school. Wisconsin/Minnesota has probably 1/2 of the US curlers, most of the rest being in the northeast, northwest. Since 2002 Olympics curling has grown a lot outside of that area with new clubs in California, Florida, Arizona, Tennessee, and Texas.
And yes Joe is was a SLOW day indeed ;D
Go to your local video rental and get the movie "Men with Brooms" a sort of comedy from a few years ago, stars Leslie Neilsen... The main thrust of the movie revolves around the concept in curling that you a supposed to call your own rule violations, and the main protagonist did not in a national championship game.

Joe, It was such a BIG, no HUGE hit that it should have a special place in the store, usually in a corner, behind a bunch of cobwebs Gordon Editted to add... NOT only is it sooo slow in here that a curling thread is the hot topic... but a couple more posts and it will be the longest "Play Ball" thread ever. Go Figure

Yeah I like Jeff Gordon he is one of the many I like. he a good driver and had a good crew with him. Joe. I agree with you about the road races, I find them very dull. I grew up on Formula One which I still think is the most exciting motor sport in the world when it's at its best, but these days it's been reduced to a bunch of cars in a long line following Michael Schumaker's Ferrari round the circuits most weeks. I watched my first NASCAR race three years ago while staying with friends in Texas and was instantly hooked. They follow all the Hendrick drivers, in particular Jeff Gordon, so as I didn't know any of the drivers at the time it was natural to follow suit, and I've followed Gordon and Jimmy Johnson ever since. I subscribe to a satellite TV station www.nasn.com that only shows American sports and I follow every race, and we even flew over for the Texas 500 last year and were surprised how much so many fans really do hate Gordon. It's a shame because he is a great driver and seems to be a good ambassador for the sport. Simon

I don't understand why so many hate him. Maybe it's because he is always winning. He not a "dirty driver" and I have never heard a bad word about him away from the track. I guess people have their reasons.

I never cared much for stock car racing, EXCEPT with the old figure 8 tracks. Bring those back and I would watch in a second (I wouldnt be watching for the crashes though ). I do perfer road racing. Even though it is slower there is a helluva a lot more skill required than zipping around making nothing but broad left turns. Gordon

I guess people have their reasons. Whatever reasons the anti-24 folk come up with for hating Gordon the bottom line is it seems to boil down to him daring to go out and beat the old-timers before he'd 'paid his dues'. Simon

I like Formula One (even went to Monaco in '78) but I really want to get half blitzed in England and watch a caravan race with the beds and toilets falling out on the track. There are more exciting F1 races to watch on TV but for pure spectacle Monaco has to be the highlight of the season and the race I would go to given the choice. We are about 2 hours from Silverstone and one day I hope I will get around to going to the British Grand Prix, especially if the new rule ch-ch-changes that came into force today in Australia inject the excitement that's been missing for some time back into the sport. I think if you came to the UK to watch caravan racing I'd have to join you. Those damn boxes on wheels cause endless frustration for other motorists caught behind them on holiday weekends, it'd be good to see justice being done ;D www.bbc.co.uk/threecounties/do_that/2004/04/caravan_racing_review.shtmlSimon
