This book is about a girls life in the 1800’s written by her as an old women. I learned a good deal about this time period and the plight of the female daughters that are lucky enough (ha ha) to be elevated to the station in life that has their feet broken and bound to accomplish the desire `lotus foot'.
Also interesting was the practice of finding not only husbands, but life long lady friends for young girls and the fact that a secret written language was formed by them to communicate. In fact, the arranged lady friends were considered more important than husband finding.
I found this book somewhat depressing but fascinating. In the end I grieved for these women.
Not a light read, but worthwhile.
