Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I've read. I must say, Angels and Demons is better!!
One of the fun things about these books is, if you've ever been to Rome, you immediately recognize the places....can see them in your minds eye and it makes the reading that much more fun.
The weird thing is, someone needs to tell the Catholic Church that these books are *fiction!*

I read this book AGES ago, when it first came out (cant believe its still on the Best Sellers List), my biggest impression was HOW THE HELL did the characters manage to do all of that in only 24 hours... my ass would have been really dragging by chapter 4.

The Da Vinci Code makes reference to a 1982 book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, a pseudo history, (that I read that same year) and uses much of the same information to create the current fiction smash best seller.
For some back ground on the theories,. esotericism ,ancient religions, people and places etc.
Do a google search on "The Holy Blood And The Holy Grail" And open the
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Blood,_Holy_Grail site.
It is interesting how in many cases an author’s 1st book is considered better than the author’s 2nd book ; when the latter becomes the famous great hit it invariably leads to the “discovery” and wider appreciation of the 1st book.
i.e. JOHN GRISHAM’s, A Time To Kill became a best seller only after The Firm; yet, the former is a far superior book than the latter IMHO.

I'm with Bob--those characters NEVER rested!
D. Brown is a lousy linguist (no artistry), but an exciting storyteller.
I sucked down Da Vinci Code in 3 nights before going to bed, and the same with Angels and Demons (which was just more of the same). No need to dwell on the writing as you read--just moving to the next plot twist was key.

The weird thing is, someone needs to tell the Catholic Church that these books are *fiction!* ...............Bob Aye, there's the Rub! I do believe certain parts of the story line are based on fact (and hushed theories)...Don't you just love Catholic Guilt? My mistake was to bring that book to Hedo. I had heard that once one began the read it was hard to put the book down down but geeze, I totally lost a couple of days of beach "goings on" ! I do agree that Angels and Demons was just as good if not better!

The weird thing is, someone needs to tell the Catholic Church that these books are *fiction!* To quote your own avatar: Are you Sure??? --looking both ways, in a gruff voice, "I AM SURE!"-- I am SURE that those who read the DaVinci Code who read Angles and Deamons next will find Angles a more captivating book..........you will spend MORE TIME thinking "I can't put this book down!" During my frequent business travels, I see MORE folks with their heads in one of these book.......I wish I could write like Dan Brown! ..........Bob

I've been waiting forever for this book to come out in paperback but because of it's phenomenal popularity the publisher decided to keep it as a hardcover since it's first press run 3 years ago. Well ... it's FINALLY coming out in paperback on March 28, 2006. Woo Hoo!!!! I guess they decided that it was a wise thing to do since there's a movie version of the book (starring Tom Hanks) coming out this year. Now I can finally see what all the hoopla is about. I absolutely loved Angels & Demons. I'm looking forward to reading this one.

I will be interested in how you like it, compared to Angels and Demons. I think Angels was more captivating, but your milage may vary! ...........Bob PS: Wow, I started this thread almost a year ago!

Like Hazel I kept waiting for this to come out in paperback. Last book I read was Angels and Demons...as recommended here...before I popped for the hardcover DaVinci Code. I did buy one used at Amazon for the almost paperback price of $9.
Just finishing The Constant Gardner, likely today, then I'll ch-ch-change pace with the Twentieth Wife a historical novel about 16th century India, before I read this one.

hey Anita, You're a reading chick have you read "the Kite Runner" yet? it was given to me as a gift over the holidays, but i haven't foundthe time to read it yet. I'm hoping that someone here will give it a glowing recommend so that i can get the motivation to pick it up. Zilla (who bought the "Davinci Code", read it, and then donated it to the public library....probably in an effort to mitigate my sin for "The Talking Parcel")

hey Anita, You're a reading chick have you read "the Kite Runner" yet? OMG, that was the BEST book. You will be thinking about this book for days after you finish. I couldn't put it down and anxiously await his second book. It (his second book) was expected out in late 05, but I haven't seen one yet.

You will be thinking about this book for days after you finish. No offense meant, ladies, but... thinking about a book for DAYS? This is supposed to be an endorsement? I read "Lord of the Rings" in the 1970s. A day hasn't passed since then that I haven't thought (some would say OBSESSED) about it. DAYS of thinking about a book seems like faint praise to me......Jake

Ah, but what kind of dull and shallow life devoid of Eldar, Khazad, Hobbits, and the descendants of the Edain!

Finally got around to purchasing and reading this book. It took me a week to finish it since I could only read it during my commutes to/from work (although I did finish the last chapter in the comfort of my cozy living room ... I just couldn't wait until the next morning to read the rest of it!)
This book was as exciting and nerve-wracking as Demons & Angels. I loved it! Just like the other book it had something for everyone: science, religion, art, mathematics, murder, deceipt, etc. I know it's a work of fiction, but it had me believing all this stuff could[/b] be true. (Oh don't get all crazy, I know it's not real!)
Can't wait to see the movie and see how it compares to the book.

I just went to the local library. They have a book store where you can buy books (either hard or soft covers) for 25 cents. I bought both the DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons for 50 cents...pretty good deal, eh? I also bought a book by Robert A. Heinlein.
