Anyone ever read the "Retief" books by Keith Laumer? Retief was a character set in the far future, when the human race occupies many planets all around the galaxy. But there are also many other races, some friendly, some not so friendly.
Retief is a Diplomat. I don't mean his personality, I mean his job. He is a member of the Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne, basically the State Department for planet Earth. As such, he is always thrust into tense situations which could break out into openly hostile war if cooler heads do not solve the problems first. He is also a world-class smart-ass and problem solver, sort of a diplomatic version of James Bond.
The stories are always light hearted, tongue-in-cheek, and hilarious, as Retief works behind the scenes and heads off all the dangerous situations created by the bumbling mistakes of his superiors.
So, anyone else read these? They are great, and would make a great series of movies. If there are other Retief fans out there, we can discuss casting the movie.....Jake
