An Embarrassment of Mangoes by Ann Vanderhoof is an enjoyable book to warm you up in the winter and make you long for *home* in the Caribbean. And it paints a fairly realistic picture of what it's like to really fulfill such a dream. The book gives a nice slice of life of their life in the sailing world & a good description of the islands they visit. Plus, who can resist the front cover photo? www.amazon.com/gp/product/0767914279/sr=1-1/qid=1139435124/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-8145091-2996020?%5Fencoding=UTF8I'm a barfer when it comes to sailing, so reading about it suits me fine. We both thought this book was more interesting than A Trip To the Beach which the Blanchards wrote about Anguilla (a lovely island with gorgeous beaches...but definite snoozville for us).

That sounds like a good Hedo book. BTW, the calender said you guys were going to Negril end of Feb. Are you staying at Hedo or somewhere else? We will be at Hedo from 2/26-3/5. Maybe we will see you there.

I think it would be a very good Hedo book.
We're going to Negril with some friends who are tight on cash, so we're staying on the cliffs. We figured we'd do a day pass on March 2nd (Thursday).....our friend, Marilyn will be there then, so we're looking forward to seeing her.
It would be cool to meet up & say 'high' to a fellow TNMCer....how would we find you (assuming we remember & you're not off on the cruise, etc. etc.)?

We are easy to spot. I am tall with a Jamaican flag tattooed on my left shoulder and Texas on the right. My wife is short and Vietnamese. During the day, we generally hang on the nude beach close to the twin box cedar with the outdoor speaker in the middle. Seeing as the 2nd is Texas Independence Day, the drinks are on me. Nights we usually sit in the corner between the main bar and the stage. We will be looking for you.

I went ahead and ordered the book for my trip. As a blue water sailor, I couldn't resist. If I ever hit the big well, I could spend a winter and spring and sail the Carib. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll be interested to hear your impressions of the book. Here's the story of how I stumbled upon the book. When we bought our house at the end of 2004 we learned that the owners were selling so they could retire and sail in the Caribbean (and based on the 70s decor we figured they'd put ALL their money into sailing over the years!). A few months later I was at the local library & saw the lovely cover of Mangoes & couldn't resist borrowing it. The librarian said they had ordered the book special for the former Town Engineer who was retiring & sailing...of course it was the person we bought the house from. A month or so after that Chris's best buddy in San Diego bought his sailboat & had dreams of sailing to the Caribbean, so we turned him on to Mangoes as well. I hope you enjoy the book & we'll look you for at Hedo NEXT WEEK! Liz

And, no doubt, Liz will be the nekkid cutie with the 1000-watt smile and the feather boa.

Tex - If you liked Mangoes, "A Trip to The Beach" is another vaguely similar book, giving a slightly jazzed up account of a couple's decision to move to Anguilla and start an upscale restaurant there. Like Mangoes, it also has a bunch of receipes scattered thru the book, as well as a nice mixture of personal anecdotes and island culture descriptions.
Sorry we missed you the Thurs in Nov. Cheers, Chris
