obviously this links directly into the directory of the site... hopefully everybody who went beyond the directory listing has up to date virus protection.

Do you think this site has viruses ? In the past I have had to wipe my hard drive and reload because of my wicked ways. How do you tell if the site is bad ? I don't download{anymore} and run McAfee's software updated but how can you tell if the site is bad ? Has anyone tried The Hun yellow pages or is there better site?
just wanted to know for educational purposes...

Thats just it Dave, you CANT tell, anymore than you can tell if someone has an STD by looking at them. I figure if their site is so lax that anyone can get into their directory structure, they are inviting you in, and why would they invite you in? Its anyones guess.

Ok, I've asked my web designer about this so hopefully this should be the definative answer as to why you sometimes see these directory structures...
You often see directory structures when someone has created a folder on their domain and uploaded pictures to it, but without creating a web page linking to them, thus after failing to find an HTML document (ie a web page) your browser will go straight to the folder and display it's contents instead.
In this case it it looks like a user called aldo063 has some space allocated to him/her on the free.fr domain and has simply uploaded pictures directly to that space/folder so he can link directly to them, for instance in emails or from message boards like this, without actually creating a website or an HTML page to link to them from.
You'll also be relieved to hear that you are at no greater risk of getting a virus by looking at these pics than you are from any other site on the net.
Simon
Edited to add : As a 'for instance' before I decided it was much easier to just use a service like Photobucket I have a couple of domains on which I created folders to upload pictures to when I wanted to link to one in my posts here on TNMC. I would post a link directly to a picture, and you would be unaware of any others in that folder... however if I had posted a link directly to the folder you would have seen its entire contents, which is basically what you have your hands on here Dave.

Call me gun shy, after having virus issues with websites in the past, I am very leary of most photo websites. the site linked above seemed just too 'open'

It's wise to be cautious Gordon, but from my limited French free.fr looks like an ISP, and aldo063 is one of its customers who has webspace allocated to him as part of his package, which he presumably is free to use to host a website, store pictures etc. Obviously I don't know anything about free.fr but you take potluck wherever you go on the net, and I can't see that you're at any more risk looking at these pictures than you would be looking at pictures hosted on any ISP in the world, such as 1and1.com who host all my clients' websites.
