Lovecraft week continues here at the TNMC, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of HP Lovecraft's Bar Mitzvah*. Tonight's movie is an ultra Grade-Z video production called "In Search of Lovecraft" from 2008. It was directed by David J. Hohl, and starred nobody you ever heard of.
Why do I bother to review it? Well, for one thing, there are precious few HPL movies out there at all. And for another reason, I really enjoyed this one! Was it any good? Well not really. But it was made with passion, and integrity, and had plenty of humorous twists, and that's enough for me. People complain about big-budget studio crap with no heart all the time. Well, this is the opposite: no budget, no talent, but plenty of heart. So I figure it deserves a shot.
Anyway, it is not based on any specific Lovecraft story, but rather is a modern setting, where a junior TV news reporter is tasked with finding out all she can about the life and legacy of HP Lovecraft as a Halloween story. But... she soon finds that HPL's mythos is all too real!
The characters are amateurish, but relatable. The directing and editing are cartoonish, but effective. And the special effects are primitive, yet chilling! If you are in the right mood, this is the kind of flick that can really entertain. I recommend it. Available now on Netflix streaming.
IMDb gives it 2.1 stars out of 10. I call bullshit. It deserves at least 3 stars. And maybe even more if you know how to appreciate a grade Z schlock-fest.
* Just kidding about the Bar Mitzvah. I don't even think he was Jewish. And I'm not sure about the timeframe, either. So sue me!
