Has anyone spent time in this area? I hear positive things about this region and my curiosity has me exploring ideas for vacation and perhaps a place for retirement. It has four mild seasons and a cosmopolitan reputation. My biggest concern is being a New Yorker in the south and also starting from scratch socially. We have time but I think about it now and again.

I know the area. Greenville, SC is close too. It is semi-mountainous, nice folks, and clean. It is southern forest land. You could do a lot worse. My grandfather was born in Texas but lived in that neck of the woods for many years.

It's highly rated for quality of life but is a little expensive housing wise. I'm hoping to visit this fall to get a better idea of what this small city is all about. It's known for it's craft beers and music, that's a good start.

Asheville would be on my short list if we were to ever leave Florida. To me to only drawback is that it is not near water. And I am a water person.
Not sure why you would worry about being a New Yorker in the south. That is sorta like being worried about walking towards the nude pool at Hedo for the first time. You will quickly realize that it is an all inclusive community.

I agree, I'd prefer to be near water and as far as being a New Yorker in the south, well I just wasn't sure about the mix. I'm going to make a trip when my schedule allows.

Gary let me know what you find out. I am out of here after the harvest of 2018.
I need good weather, nice homes, and great gold courses.

My sister and her husband have lived in Greenville for the past 15 years and love it. I’ve been there many times and we are targeting the Greenville area for our retirement. I also like Ashville but now know Greenville much better. Real Estate taxes are low and the city if very cosmopolitan. I like that it is a university town giving a good balance between the retiree and young population.
If any of you know Krazy Karen from Hedo she retired to Greenville leaving New Jersey behind. She loves it too.
Edited to add that Greenville enjoys many large lakes including Lake Jocassee a 7,500-acre, 300-foot deep reservoir created by the state in partnership with Duke Power.

Joe, I'll be sure to let you know and thanks for the heads-up Anita.
The Asheville area has been getting lots of good press for years and I'd like to see what it's all about. Real Estate taxes in the N.Y. Tri-state area have pretty much ruined the ability of the working class to stay here in retirement.
It's one thing to leave on your own and another to be forced out. Very frustrating!
