I recently saw Roman Polanski's " Chinatown" (Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston, John Hillerman, James Hong, etc.), a classic neo-noir from the seventies. I'd never seen it before. This movie is revered by many film critics and film buffs. I'm not sure I get why. Yes, it was enjoyable, creepy, suspenseful, and evocative of the Bogart-era noir classics. But is it really deserving of the praise it receives? I haven't made up my mind yet. Have you seen it? Did YOU think it was awesome? or just another pastiche of old private eye cliches? Not that there's anything wrong with that!

I remember seeing Chinatown when it came out. I also remember liking it. Today I could not tell you what it was about as I don't remember. Either my love child era memory is clouded or it wasn't that memorable. In short it could not have been 'all that' if I don't even remember the plot.

I get chills just looking at that bandage on Jack's nose. Same feeling I had the other night when I was watching Payback with Mel Gibson. Mel gives that kid's nose ring a hard tug. Same affect as Chinatown.

I loved Payback much more than Chinatown, but I didn't make that connection. Good observation! Probably a bit of an homage.
My favorite Chinatown scene: "She's my sister!" SLAP! "She's my daughter!" SLAP! "She's my sister!" SLAP!!

And I think that Chinatown scene might be an homage to the old SNL commercial parody about Shimmer. It's a floor wax and a dessert topping. I loved Payback much more than Chinatown, but I didn't make that connection. Good observation! Probably a bit of an homage. My favorite Chinatown scene: "She's my sister!" SLAP! "She's my daughter!" Just watched the much-maligned sequel. Review to come. I think maligned is a well earned description from what I remember.

Well I liked it a lot. Still working on the review. I tried to write one tonight, but it just wasn't coming together. I think I need more perspective. As they say, soon come, mon. But for now, let's just say that I enjoyed the sequel a lot.

Denice and I watched it last night. It's a good story line a little better than your average Private Eye movie. I always thought he nose got broken! Man was I surprised when the guy stuck the knife in his nose, you could see what was coming and i I just grab my nose when he pulled the knife.
All in all I would give it 3.5 out of 5 star. The ending became very predictable and when see drove away in the car I knew what was going to happen. Good acting by Jack and Fay.

What happened to your nose, Gittes? Somebody slammed a bedroom window on it?
Nope. Your wife got excited. She crossed her legs a little too quick. You understand what I mean, pal?

It was nice seeing thirties-style noir with seventies-style raunchiness!

I like the 30's suits men wore. well cut three piece suits with well cut jackets, pants and some real slick dress shoes.
