Just got a new Alienwear 14x laptop. My old laptop dates back to the introduction of Vista days with an antiquated Core 2 Duo proc, 2Gb Ram and 100Gb HD.
The Alienwear sports a core i7-3840QM proc, 16gb ram, dual 256Gb solid state drives, and a BluRay... best of all Windows 7.
Going to test drive it tonight, but its NOT going to Russia with me. Not risking it going AWOL on me over there. The old standby will make one last trip.

My parents were looking for a new computer. I told them DO NOT get a new one without my permission (I am basically their IT department). I did not want them coming home with a Win 8 machine and then asking me how to use it (briefly: I don't know how to use it).
So what does my brother do? He goes out and orders them a new Win 8 computer! Arghghghg. I told him he has earned a position as permanent and sole IT manager for the folks' house.
Glad you managed to find a Win 7 machine, Gordon. Win XT would have been even better.

Glad you managed to find a Win 7 machine, Gordon. Win XT would have been even better. Windows XP? Nah... you'd have a real hard time find drivers to support everything. It's Windows 7 until they get those touch screen laptops coming out. Then maybe. I'm running 8 now on a test machine, cause it's part of my job to be ready, but it's really quite dissapointing.

I have been thinking of getting a new Lap Top. What are the problems with Windows 8?

Technically nothing, they just completely re-made the primary interface to look like a windows phone. It's called Metro UI, with the primary goal of providing touch screen access like a tablet or phone. Not a ton of applications for it yet, but maybe someday it will be better.
I've been running it since the preview versions, and on a laptop I mostly go straight from the Metro UI back to the desktop.
The desktop in Windows 8 isn't the same as Windows 7 unfortunately. You loose a lot of the features they want you to access from the Metro UI. I really miss the run option. To use that under Windows 8 desktop you have to do Windows-Key+R.
Just stuff like that. ch-ch-changes that seem to have been made for the sake of just ch-ch-changing stuff...

I think they are trying to provide a unified look across desktops/laptops/tablets/phones. Nothing wrong with that goal, but it's going to be a huge learning curve for those of us who have mastered the nuances of the current systems.
I suspect that it will actually be easier to use for the casual users (like my parents), but when something goes wrong (and something ALWAYS goes wrong), they are going to need somebody who knows the nuances to fix it. And those folks won't exist for a while.

I still use XP and am happy with it. Maybe it depends on what you do with your computer. I did read recently that around 40% of the computers in the world are running on XP, so probably, it could be made to work fairly well for a while longer. My wife has Vista and it sucks. ...probably will see how Windows8 works out to make up my mind on a new system.

If I had a Dell XPS 12... www.dell.com/us/p/xps-12-l221x/pd?~ck=mn&~ck=mnI'd be running Windows 8 for certain. Since I'm not, and I don't see myself paying 3x the amount for 1/2 the power of my desktop. I'll be running Windows 7 for a while.

It is fine. It even runs a lot of software that WON'T run on my Win 7 laptop. And Microsoft is clearly still supporting XP, as I get frequent Windows Updates to install on it.

I am currently running Windows Vista on my Lap Top. That is what it came with 4 years ago when I bought it. I have had any problems with Vista. Denice is running Windows 7 on her lap Top that she bought a 2 years ago. I like Windows 7 and if I get a new Lap Top I thought I would get windows 7 with it.
I was just wondering what Windows 8 is all about.
