Lance Armstrong did his big interview with Oprah in Austin yesterday and presumably, he looked in the camera with sad puppy dog eyes and apologized, etc. etc.
One side of the story: Lance Armstrong doped for years, looked us in the eye and lied about it for years, and couldn't have won without it.
The other side of the story: Everyone was doing it. In the last Tour de France race, you would have had to go down to 16th place or so to find a racer who wasn't doping. My good friend's 19 year old son is a professional bike racer. He told me that the sport is by and large clean now but up until 5 or so years ago, doping was a given.
I don't know. The powers that be in the sport knew that doping was prevalent. It does fuck up the sport, but for the French to get in a huff about Armstrong's doping when all of their riders were doing it too or for the US Postal Service to be shocked, when they could have found out the straight goods easily enough before they shelled out a few million bucks is a little much. I suppose that this is the price of cleaning up the sport.
Armstrong lives here in Austin and has the reputation of being a jerk, which wasn't helped by his threatening team mates not to tell on him and now (it is rumored) threatening to expose others who are doping. It makes for good theater though.

The guy is a jerk. He made millions by winning so in the long run he's got the cash.

The guy is a jerk. He made millions by winning so in the long run he's got the cash. Exactly Joe!! A cheat is a cheat is a cheat. This jerk off cheated his fans, he cheated his team mates, he cheated his opponents, and he cheated his sponsors. He also bullied his team mates into silence, and even went so far as to write to the International Olympic Committee about former World Anti-doping Agency head Dick Pound saying he was guilty of “reprehensible and indefensible” behaviour and "must be suspended or expelled from the Olympic movement." How low can you get to cover your own cheating arse? And now the game is up he is taking the Oprah route to hopeful redemption, and perhaps an eventual return to the sport, rather than telling all to a hard hitting journalist, or better still crawling back down the hole he crawled out of and thinking about the genuine drug free competitors he stole medals and glory from, and the millions of dollars he earned through his cheating and dishonesty.

IMHO, his big confession with Oprah look like a well rehearsed tactical ploy rather than contrition.

Different sports for different places. A motorcycle racer, Ben Spies, went to high school in east Texas with my oldest son and graduated and got into Motorcycle Grand Prix racing. He got a good contract with Suzuki and took off to Europe. I didn't think it was a big deal until an Italian at Hedo mentioned that he really followed Moto GP. I told him that I knew a racer named Ben Spies and he reacted as if I said I knew Elvis or Beeb or someone really important. We will see him race at a race in Austin in April, but it will be the first time we have seen him race. I used to follow car racing when I was younger but lost interest. The new track here has me hooked again and we chumped off and bought some seats at the Circuit of the Americas track here last week.

Oprah: Why did you cheat, Lance?
Lance: Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.

He had to dope to win, and he had to lie to not get kicked out. I don't see where he is anything but a fierce competitor.
The fault lies with the hypocritical organizers who arbitrarily ban certain tactics while allowing others.

IMHO, his big confession with Oprah look like a well rehearsed tactical ploy rather than contrition. It was. He most likely felt that by gpoing to Oprah that she would have felt sorry for him and got the American public to do the same. What he should have done was do an interview with some like Bob Costas who would have taken him to task and got some better answers out of him. Instead he was a chicken shit and tried to hide behind Oprah's skirt.

Oprah probably paid him because she's desperate to get the interview -- OWN has been doing shitty, ratings-wise.

An old friend said on Facebook
"It was like watching horribly mismatched dance partners: Ginger Rodgers arm-in-arm with Captain Kangaroo."
Which has me baffled. Was she comparing Oprah to Ginger Rodgers and Lance to Captain Kangaroo or the other way around... besides, if Oprah is Ginger Rogers, that makes Lance- Mr Green Jeans.
