I finally got a chance to play around with a Windows 8 machine yesterday at Best Buy. I was pleasantly surprised!
The tile interface is pretty cool, and easy to deal with. It's also easy to bypass if you don't want to use it; a click in the lower left corner brings up the standard interface we are all familiar with. Having both options seems like a nice approach.
Also, my parents Win XP computer is getting pretty long in the tooth, and I may have to fix them up with a new one soon. I was dreading having to teach them an entire new OS, but this tile thing looks like it could be perfect for them.
Anyone else check it out yet? What did you think?

Edited: Oops, I went back and played with it some more, and my post above is a bit misleading. Clicking in the lower left corner doesn't necessarily bring up the "desktop," it brings up the last app that you ran. In my case, that was the desktop. In the more general case, you get to the standard desktop by clicking the tile for it. You get back to the tile page by clicking in the lower left corner, though.

Without a touchscreen on my big computer, I see no advantage to migrating to 8.

It works with a mouse or with a touch screen. But I agree, the advantages are mostly that it is easier to deal with if you only have a fat finger and not a precise mouse cursor.

Many major corporations (including my current and previous) haven't even upgraded to Win7. When they built me a new computer, I was given XP/SP3, as is every other employee. Easier to support because it's more stable, I assume.

I still prefer XP to all of them!

Until Micro$oft provides a compelling reason to upgrade, I'll probably be sticking with this decade-old OS for the foreseeable future.
