I was watching the Rays and the Blue Jays tonight when Blue jays pitcher J.A. Happ was hit in the head with a line drive. What a sicking sound even on the TV. He went down like a sack of potatoes. I don't think I have ever seen a guy hit that hard. I remember about 4 years ago Jose Martinez was pitching for the Giants and he took a shot in the left eye, but he got right up. Brandon McCarthy of the A's took a shot last year and he had to have surgery for a contusion on his brain. MLB is talking about getting some sort of protection but unless they put a football helmet on them there is not much more they can do. They have talked about putting a Kevlar liner in their hat but that won't help much with a shot right on the side of the head like Happ took tonight. Joe we were AT that game, right behind home plate. You could here the ball hit the pitcher's head . . it was sickening!! Luckily, he is OK and out of the hospital. Looking at the video, what folks on TV saw that we couldn't was he was moving his hands and talking, but we only saw a slight movement of a foot or so. Everyone in the stands stood horrified - it really looked like he was completely knocked out and possibly seriously injured. I was a bit stunned at how long it took for someone to get by his side . . . it seemed like folks just looked at him, "Wow, he's down. What do we do now?" The type of injury that can occur from that type of hit in the head means that seconds can be the difference between life and death. The casual nature in which the "first responders" responded was WAY short of what I would have wanted had it been me. I jumped up when it happened and was yelling in my own brain, "What the FUCK are you guys doing?? GET OUT THERE!!" ..............Bob

When he first went down I thought he was out, but about 2 seconds later you could see him move his feet and hands.

One quarter of the season is already gone, any surprises yet? Winners or losers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Losers are the Dodgers. Big payroll increase, zero productivity. I think heads will be rolling real soon.
Winners are the Yankee's. No Jeter, Arod, Tex, Granderson out until recently, and they keep winning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the biggest losers are the Angels along with Josh Hamilton. Biggest winner would be the Braves along with Justin Upton. Although BJ is still awful.. They have played through major injuries and remained on top. My biggest surprise is Cabrera. His is a stud and is competing for a second Triple Crown in a row. That is unheard of. Frank Robinson won the Triple Crown in 66 and was on pace again in 67 until he ripped up his knee mid year. Surprisingly Yaz went on and won the Triple Crown that year. Biggest frustration is the Rays. The couldn't hold on to a late inning lead if it were coated in super glue.

Another blown save in the ninth. Another loss for the Rays. I fear we are doomed to play 500 ball all year. Time to shake things up a little and bring Archer and Myers up from Durham.

NOLA, did your son move to Austin? He has 6 more hours to finish up in summer school and then he is going to decide where he is headed. Still a toss up between Denver and Austin

We are officially halfway home and the Pirates have the best record in baseball. Never would have guessed that.
A great weekend series between the Rays and Tigers with the Rays picking up the last two. I am soooo impressed with Joe Maddon as a manager. I think after this weekend he might have passed Earl Weaver as my all time favorite. I think he would be a fun guy just to hang around the pool and drink beers with all afternoon.

They couldn't even win one out of three with the Astros if their lives depended on it. They should hire Barry Bonds as their team pharmacist. Feel better now? Carry on.

Thanks Nola. The last thing they need is Barry Bonds hanging around the club house. we will get to see over the next 4 day who is the shitter team, the Padres or the Giants.

Joe, at least you got a no hitter out of the first half of the season.
The Rays won 14 out of 16 going into to break. They open after the break with an Eastern Division swing. Need a solid start and the rest of the season should fall into place.

Rays kick the Red Sox tonight! Price has been incredible since coming off the DL. And Meyers is certainly the real thing. Cannot wait to get Cobb back now too. Just do not want to peak too soon.

Giants lost 3 of 4 to the Reds and by big numbers. They have the Cubs for the next three days but I don't think that will be of any help.

Cannot believe it but I love it that the Rays are active just before the trade deadline. Not how they operate but they just picked up Jesse Crain from the White Sox this afternoon. His relief numbers were unconscious if the first half. He has a little soreness right now but the Rays like him. And with there bullpen they can bring him along slowly until he is healthy.
He will be killer at playoff time.

Very quite trade deadline this year. Most of the teams in the running are staying with the players that started the seasom for them.
