Austin has new parking meters that accept credit cards. I saw on the local news last night that they are going to test a new iPhone app that will tell you the nearest empty parking space. I don't know how they will deal with folks who just overstayed and didn't pay more. Time will tell.

NYC got one of these a while back; there was a TV news story when it was introduced, but nothing since, so I have no idea if there was ever any fallout from this thing.

San Francisco has had the credit card meters for a couple of years. The iphone app would be great.
Actually we could use the iPhone app hear in Healdsburg. Parking downtown is very hard to find and it really pisses me off.

Chicago got rid of all their parking meters a few years ago. Now, instead of feeding a meter, you stick money into a machine that prints you out a parking pass for so many minutes (depending how much money you fed into it) which you put on your dashboard. If you leave before your time is up, you can use it elsewhere until it expires. Kinda nice. Oh, and it takes credit cards, too, if you don't have the coins.

They have those in Manhattan, but not in Brooklyn.
