Lighting strikes, combined with a record warm and dry spring, started two fires this week, about 150 miles east of where I live. One fire on the Seney Wildlife refuge is in the same area where I worked on the big fire in 1976. This time around only about 3000 (6 square miles) of the refuge burned. It was due, everyone could see that it was going to happen because of the fuel build up since 76. The other fire (duck (why a no chicken?) Lake Fire) is huge, mostly in a state forest and was explosive on Friday, it is well over 20,000 acres and didnt stop moving forward until it got to Lake Superior. Its currently the 3rd largest fire in state history. Its still burning on the flanks and may not be contained until early next week. Both fires are in Jack Pine. JP need fire as part of its life cycle, fire is required to open their seed cones. So in a few years this area will be full of young green saplings again. Extent of the duck (why a no chicken?) (why a no chicken?) Lake Fire (each square is 1 mile on a side) www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/20120526_Duck_Lake_PIO_0800_387190_7.pdf

Just saw a news report on this. Look at the bright side -- at least it's not snow.

The fires, so far, have been pretty much on the dry land areas, where the Jack Pine live. If they ever start burning in the peat bogs, like it did in 76, this fire wont be completely out until it does snow again in the fall.
I see that Jakes latent duck (why a no chicken?) (why a no chicken?) joke is still active

We should do posts that mostly/only contain that word from now on until someone gets the hint.
