Just sitting here watching Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)...
Smoking section in the movie theater... 12.00 concert tickets... Smoking in SCHOOL!! No pagers, No cell phones... No computers, they had BOOKS... Smelling the copies handed out by teachers... I did that... lol Rotary Dial telephones...
How things have changed in 30 short years... it seems like yesterday.

Cell phones are the biggest ch-ch-changes in movie plots. Watch any Bogart movie and ask yourself if the plot would still work in the age of cell phones!

The corollary, and a very difficult aspect for moviemakers who care about such things, the use of current technologies at critical points in movies that might seem very quaint in 30 years or so.
Some directors lucked out big time, Stanley Kubrick in "2001" used what we would call tablets and his video phones were very similar to current webcam technology, except for the AT&T phone booth.

Also, the "Star Trek: Enterprise" problem. That TV show was set BEFORE the Captain Kirk series, yet still in the future from our perspective. So they had to depict technology that was more advanced that current technology, yet less advanced that Kirk's tech. Which was a very difficult problem, seeing as how in many ways, we are already more advanced than the Kirk era!

As for the Gordon Gecko phone, one of my favorite current TV shows is "Psych," about a fake psychic detective who is obsessed with the 80s. He is frequently shown (in the promos) talking on that very same Gordon Gecko phone!
