I never saw "Firefly" when it was in first run, but Hazelita got me the COMPLETE series DVD for Christmas (all 14 episodes). Man, what a great show!
It reminds me a lot of the original Star Trek. Greatly drawn characters, interesting situations, plenty of humor and plenty of drama and action. Also, lots of great guest stars.
In case you aren't familiar, it is set in a far-distant future when the human race is all over the galaxy (except nobody is left on "Earth of old" for some reason). The main characters live on a renegade space ship called "Serenity" who make their living running contraband and avoiding the "Alliance" (oppressive galactic government).
Some especially favorite tidbits: The characters all talk in a sort of low-class patois, with lots of contractions that decent folk wouldn't use. Also lots of Chinese mixed in with the English, implying vague repercussions about what must have happened on Earth long, long ago. Several of the main characters are familiar from other shows, but they make these roles unique and memorable. All in all, awesome stuff.
Any other fans out there?........Jake

"Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal." Wash
Did she complete the set by getting you the full length movie "Serenity"?

Actually, we've watched the "Serenity" movie several times on cable, never having seen the TV series. I'm looking forward to watching the movie again after finishing the series. I do love the spaceship, which does look a lot like a firefly! For the uninitiated, the name of the ship is "Serenity" and it is a "Firefly class" vehicle.

I'm fond of the social interaction between the characters. Even the little "weight lifting buddies" relationship that Jayne has with Shepard Book is interesting.
Zilla (who would say the series was like "a futuristic Western in space")

A "western in space" is exactly what Gene Roddenberry said he wanted Star Trek to be.

Tonight, we re-watched the movie "Serenity" after having finished watching the original series. The movie makes MUCH more sense when you are familiar with the TV series. All in all, the entire run is HIGHLY recommended. Joss Whedon did a wonderful job of putting a nice punctuation mark on the series with the movie wrap-up.
