For the first time in my life I finally got some funds out of the State of California. They have new regulation on Ag diesel engines. For any Ag diesel 1998 or older they will buy it from you and give you credit towards a new one. The amount your recevie is based on past annual average of hours of usage, the tier the new motor is, and the cost of thenew tractor.
This tractor is a 1992 model that we bought brand new. It has about 6100 hours on it of which I put about 6095 of them on it. Basically it was my tractor. It had been worked hard more than once and was a damn good piece of equipment.
The transmission was getting bad, the AC was going and the power steering pump was starting to have problems. About $10,000.00 in parts and we would do the work in our shop to get it back in top running shape again. However, the tractor even in good running condition was worth only about $9000.00. So it's the old $5.00 saddle on the $1.00 horse game.
The State purchased it from me for a decent price (more that what it was worth). I hated to see it go after 20 seasons but the numbers worked out okay on it.The unfortunate thing is it was scheduled to be destroyed by the state. I told the salesman form the tractor company and the State Air Pollution rep that I did not want to see the pictures after it was destroyed.
1992 Ford 5030 - 62hp at 2250 rpm
This is what we bought to take it's place.
2011 Kubota M7040 - 72hp at 2400rpm
I don't know if I will be able to put 6000 hours on this one but with what the state gave us and tax deductions it is only going to cost us about 1/3 of the sales price. We thought it was a damn good deal. This Kubota has the tier IV motor which was able to give me a large cost recovery on the old tractor.
It's the latest that Kubota makes, with all the goodies that they put on them. I have a big cushy air ride seat, and a AM-FM /CD player which is MP3 ready. I hope it last as long and works as well as the Ford did. Also the Ford at top working conditons would burn 4 to 5 gallons of diesel per hour. The New kubota will burn in the same condtions only 2 to 2.5 gallons per hour.
We have been running Kubota's since 1990 and this one makes Kubota #6. We still have the other 5 and plan on running them for many more years to come.
