There are several forms of steel guitar (which gives the trademark sound to Hawaiian and Western Swing) but the original and most versatile is the older style pedal steel. The big disadvantages are that it is bulky and takes about 45 minutes to assemble and tune properly. I took this picture last night in Austin of an old school 20 string pedal steel guitar (off to the left of the guy standing in the picture). The instrument originated in Hawaii and probably first made it to Texas in the 1930s via one of Bob Will's musicians who served in the Navy in Hawaii. The picture isn't great (Iphone), but the guitar was a beauty. I was let down a little by the performance - when I saw the guitar, I had great expectations - and the guy wasn't bad, but he wasn't getting the best out of the guitar. Attachments:
