This weekend in my movie class, we had a bonus screening of the new Disney comedy " The Muppets", starring Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and, of course, The Muppets themselves. For the review, please click here.

Denice and I spent hours watching the Muppets we our daughters were small. It was good TV. Looks like we are going to do it again with the grand kids.

Even if the kids aren't that crazy about this new movie, you guys should love it -- very reminiscent of their old movies and the TV show.

I loved the old TV show, it was a college favorite and best enjoyed with a cheap bottle of alcohol.
Perhaps the parents would have brought more kids if you werent handing out free post-viewing showers for the kids.
I plan on seeing the franchise reboot. Even if I end up going by myself the bottle of alcohol in the back row should result in new friends. Bear right... Left frog.

Although there was a small turnout for this screening, those who did show up really seemed to enjoy it quite a good deal.

I'm surprised by the title of this film. They've had a long-running TV show and multiple movies already, and this one is just called, "The Muppets"? That seems odd.

Yeah, I thought the same thing, too. Not sure what the strategy is here. My guess from the business/marketing standpoint: now that Disney owns the franchise, they are trying for a complete reboot with a new generation of kids, so this title is more or less serving as an introduction of the franchise to these kids.

Makes sense.
But I hope the "reboot" doesn't completely invalidate the old time-line and destroy decades of canon, pissing off generations of past fans.

Well, I generally don't post "spoilers" for the movies, but there's one thing I can tell you: due to legal/licensing reasons, none of the Muppets that currently appear on Sesame Street are in this movie. That is because Sesame Street "owns" its Muppets characters, which are separate from the characters in The Muppets franchise.

That too bad, I would have been interested in the recasting of the Bert and Ernie characters for the reboot.
Re: the name of the movie... "Star Trek", "Mission: Impossible, and myriad others, pretty much the same situation and they worked fairly well.

I wasn't even thinking about Sesame Street. I was thinking about The Muppet Show. That was a show, wasn't it?

Yes -- it aired here in the U.S., but was produced and taped in England (Lord Lew Grade).
