We've discussed low-carb diets here before. I'm a huge fan. Low-carbing always helps me lose weight, and it lowers my blood pressure and cholesterol, too. But it can be tough to maintain when eating out, especially at fast food joints. But now, we have the Unwich! I don't know how many of youse guys have Jimmy John's sandwich shops near you, but they are all over my area. They make a variety of subs and club sandwiches, and they will make any as an "Unwich" if you like. This means that they delete the bread, and instead wrap the goodies in a huge Iceberg lettuce leaf. It is surprisingly tasty, and the crunchiness of the lettuce makes it much more satisfying than you'd expect. I'm hooked. Anyone else ever try these? What did you think? And while we're at it, have you found any other low-carb tips and tricks for eating out on the cheap?.........Jake

I've never heard of that chain, but I like the idea. Unfortunately, after Dr. Atkins' death, the low-carb diet movement lost quite a bit of popularity, so I've found it hard to locate "carb friendly" restaurants. Subway, for example, used to offer low-carb wraps as an alternative, but no more; I haven't been to one in a while, but the last time I checked, you could get a whole wheat wrap, but it technically wasn't low-carb.

I know what you mean about Atkins. After he died, his organization seemed to go on an all-out blitz to squeeze every last dime out of the concept in as short a time as possible, even though it rapidly destroyed the organization. I'm sure Atkins was spinning in his grave at the commercialization of his concept.
By the by, I'm in a hotel tonight, and I bought some "unwich" ingredients at a local grocery and made a couple in my room. Every bit as good as the Jimmy Johns ones, only I didn't have the handy wax paper to wrap them in. So they were kind of messy. But very easy to make. One big leaf of Iceberg, a squirt of mayo, and a few layers of deli meat and cheese. Yum!!
ETA: I just checked the Jimmy John's store locator. The only New York cities listed were Amherst, Ithaca, Syracuse, and Webster. But I know I've seen them all over Pennsylvania. Still, kind of far to go for lunch, though!

Yeah, I already raise a few eyebrows in my office taking a one hour lunch break, so I don't think a trip outside the city for an unwich would go over terribly well.

We have a Jimmy Johns in the big city..Marquette... thats a 2 hour drive so Im not going there just for the sub, however, the next time we have to make a Target or a Lowes run I will check it out, sounds good.

I have never heard of the chain, but my youngest daughter Staci has mention those to me. Use Iceberg lettuce instead of bread. She makes them at home for herself. Might have to try one soon.
Even if you use the lettuce in the place of bread you still have to keep the mayo, salami,cheese and other goodies off.

One thing I'll do at restaurants when ordering is just asking them to hold whatever starch is included in the meal (usually potatoes or rice, occasionally pasta) and either give me extra vegetables (if that's included in the entree) or just replace the starch with a salad. So far, I've had reasonably decent luck with this and they don't charge me extra for the substitution (but that may ch-ch-change if the economy improves).

I had one of those back in the spring when I was in Florida on a business trip and I thought it was delicious. I had no idea it was called an Unwich, but it was a delicious turkey wrap with lettuce instead of the soft flour tortilla. We have a Jimmy John's right across the street from my work; I don't eat out often for lunch but I may have to venture over there before long.
