Saw this at the weekend and throughly enjoyed every minute of it. Captain America: The First Avenger does a first class job telling in the story of Steve Rogers' transformation into a superhero in a top secret military project after being deemed unfit for military service in WWII. The world of comic books and 'real life' are lovingly blended to create an alternative, yet believable, reality.
My favourite quotes :
Abraham Erskine : "Do you want to kill Nazis?" Steve Rogers : "I don't want to kill anybody. I don't like bullies, I don't care where they're from."
Nick Fury : "Sorry about that. I was trying to break it to you slowly." Steve Rogers : "Break what?" Nick Fury : "You've been asleep for almost 70 years... You alright?" Steve Rogers : "Yeah. It's just... I had a date."
Great summer action movie.

We saw it opening weekend. I thought it was probably one of the better comic book flicks. I liked the back story on Howard Stark It sets the table well for next summer and The Avengers. And I still cannot believe people hit the door before the credits are finished with this series. You know the trailer is coming for the next movie. I can only assume they feel like they can catch it on line. But I think half the fun is seeing it right there in the theater.

How many characters has Nick Fury collected by now? In the movies, I mean. He's got Stark, Hulk, CA. Anyone else?

I saw this last night and enjoyed it also. BTW, did anyone notice the "young" Nick Fury in the WWII scenes? There were two Nick Fury comic book series -- Col. Nick Fury, Agent Of SHIELD (set in the present day -- this is the one Samuel L. Jackson is playing) and Sgt. Nick Fury & His Howling Commandos (set in WWII). I picked up on it the first time I saw Cpl. Dum-Dum Dugan and Pinky Pinkerton in the scene where they were all imprisoned.

Did anyone watch the TV cartoons based on these comic book characters back in the mid-60's? I was a big fan as kid -- I remember Capt. America was Monday; Iron-Man was on Tuesday; The Incredible Hulk Wednesday; Thor was naturally Thursday; and Prince Namor The Sub-Mariner Friday. The animation was pretty cheesy, but I didn't particularly care at the time.

I was in Cleveland over the weekend. They were filming scenes for The Avengers. All the actors have been on location for several days filming exterior action scenes downtown. I was bummed I did not have any spare time or I would have gone down and scoped it out

I have shown a couple to my grandson and he loves them.

NYC should be outraged that anyone would mistake the two.
Edited: Hopefully no one will mistake the 30 foot tall lighthouse in Lake Erie for the Statue of Liberty

They've doubled Toronto for NYC in quite a few movies. I wonder why they can't just say the story takes place in Cleveland if they're filming there?

Finally saw this movie tonight on Netflix. Not bad. I could have sworn the chick was Kate Beckinsale, except for the actress having a completely different name. The Howard Stark connection was way cool.
One cute touch, which I don't know if it is a modern innovation, or was based on the original comics: The bad guy was named Schmidt. Played by Hugo Weaving. Who played "Agent Smith" in the Matrix movies! As far as I can tell, Schmidt=Smith. If this character existed in the original comics and had that name, it is quite a coincidence! If not, it was a sly wink from the film makers.
