There are lots of names for this concept (stereo lithography, rapid prototyping, etc.), but lately the phrase of choice seems to be "three-D printing." The latest work has been on getting more variety of materials and a greater range of properties into the "printed" item. Anyway, it's pretty cool stuff.

I have seen smaller, simpler versions of these for some time, but not sure the material that was used for duplication (it deposited droplets that built up the object). Last time I checked into it, that machine could makes objects up to 6" in any dimension was about $15K (not counting the duplicating material). I doubt the objects had any sort of strength to them, it was more for checking out prototypes.
