Man Dies After Detroit Party Bus Accident
24-Year-Old Dies After Sticking Head Out Of Party Bus
DETROIT -- A man on a party bus died after he stuck his head out the emergency exit hatch, according to police.
The accident happened early Sunday morning on Interstate 94 at Van Dyke Avenue on Detroit's east side. A group of men on a large party bus were celebrating a bachelor party, police said. That’s when police said 24-year-old Salvator Talluto popped open an overhead emergency hatch, stuck his head out of the bus and moments later his head slammed into an overpass along I-94.
Talluto was knocked unconscious and was severely injured. He was being treated at St. John's Hospital where he died Sunday evening.
Saturday night Talluto's family members gathered at the hospital hoping for the best. They said Talluto wanted to have his organs donated.
In the meantime, investigators are still trying to figure out what happened.
The bus company released a statement Monday.
"This is a horrible tragedy and our thoughts are with the family of this young man," the company said. "The driver of this bus has an excellent driving record. She was unaware the emergency hatch in the rear had been opened while she was driving. She's devastated this occurred while she was behind the wheel."
Custom party buses can hold up to 30 people and sometimes the good time turns into a dangerous situation.
Just last September two men, Sanuwell Landrum and Kyle Davis, were killed after a freak accident on a party bus. A door swung open as the bus was heading down Interstate 75 near 9 Mile Road. Davis was thrown out and died instantly; Landrum jumped out to help his friend and was stuck and killed by a car.
And only a few months ago, 26-year-old Sean Chapin was killed after an accident on a party bus. The emergency exit door he was leaning on flew open sending Chapin onto the roadway. He died a short time later.
