The funny thing about this was every web site I go to, I have to re-enter my password and username when appropriate. I went to DennyP and entered what I thought was my info and got the message:
BANNED!! THIS IS A PERMANENT BAN!!
Well OK then!! I done got myself banned AGAIN and I haven't even posted anything lately.
All attempts to register were met with "YOU ARE BANNED ASSHOLE!! DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!"
Then I remembered to delete the cookie and enter my correct info, and all is well!!
You would think after 6 or 7 years folks would let bygones be bygones . . . .
Guess not.

I had my own bad luck with that windows update this past week. It completely reset my desktop (I HATE THAT), but worse I had the same issues with signing into web pages and the desktop was permanently locked me to "windows basic mode". I didnt spend $300 on a new video card for windows basic mode when the damn thing is capable of 3D display.
I ended up backing out of the update (successful), except that it refuses to let FF auto login on sites like this one (have to manual login, and its starting to piss me off).

Just curious here, but why do you allow Windows to auto-update? I have always had that turned off. Also, do you read Windows Secrets? They publish a review of the Windows updates and advise on which ones to install, which ones to skip and which ones to wait on until more testing has been done by IT Managers in the field.

I dont. I have my computer configured to notify me when updates are available, I review the updates and allow it to proceed if the update appears reasonable. Most of the time this system works, sometimes there are issues to resolve, this was the first time I ever had to back out of an update.

I seem to recall you once saying that you used to use VMWare. Is that (still) true? If so, maybe it would make sense to virtualize your work system, then run the update on the VM to ensure it's OK before installing it on your main system.

I do have VMware in my arsenal. I havent loaded it onto my new computer yet. First hing I have to check is whether the version I have (32 bit) is compatible with the 64bit version of Windows that I installed. It does seem like a lot of effort to go through however to install something that be guaranteed by the manufacturer.

If the 32-bit version of VMWare can only run 32-bit OS's, then I guess it's something of a moot point.
