Looking for an Austin expert around these here parts. We are headed over for the UT graduation in May. We intend to spend a couple of extra days for R&R since we have never been to this part of Texas. Looking for some must do and must eat suggestions.

The Travel Channel's Man vs. Food did an episode in Austin. This place looked enticing but I don't know if it suits your taste or if it's too far from your location. www.saltlickbbq.com/

I am ignorant on many subjects, but Austin I know well. When are you coming exactly and what do you like to do? Are you flying or driving? We will have to get together.

UT graduation is Saturday May 21. We are going to fly in on the 17th or 18th and out on the 22nd.
Looking for some good places to eat. They certainly don't have to be white table cloth or exotic. Just something that says Austin. Gary's link actually looked intriguing. For example if I were headed to San Antonio I would be thinking Mexican food and would hit La Fogata as soon as I got there.
Same with sightseeing. Looking for the flavor of Austin. We love outdoors stuff, historical areas, unusual shopping areas. Fun stuff.
Would love to perhaps do dinner if we can match schedules.

I will come up with a good list for you. My first recommendations: Mexican food: Matt's El Rancho www.mattselrancho.com/Food with a view: The Oasis www.oasis-austin.com/The Oasis might be a good place to meet you, as it is right up the road from us. Outdoors: Hippie Hollow (nude swimming area) you can see it from the Oasis. Zilker Park: Just across the river from downtown - nice park with (cold as ice) spring fed pool Barton Springs Hamilton Pool - a several hundred acre grotto created when the roof of an ancient cave collapsed. Historical: Maybe take a carriage ride around downtown - see the State Capitol, antebellum governor's mansion, Susanna Dickinson (last survivor of the Alamo) house, Driscoll Hotel. Several good museums downtown Fun: Sixth Street, particularly on Friaday and Saturday nights (think Bourbon Street) Carlos and Charlies - outdoor dancing venue Scholz Garten - old (1866) downtown beer garden any number of good live music venues.

History, I would throw in the Bullock Museum (Texas history} The French Legation - Interesting place - this was the French diplomatic presence in the Republic of Texas You might want to step inside the State Capitol and see the Elizabet Ney sculptures of Sam Houston and Stephen F Austin. Fine beef: III Forks Restaurant - Lavaca Street at the river. This is white tablecloth but in Austin, you really don't even have to wear a coat unless you like - good live music in the bar. This is a small chain and not unique to Austin, but good eats nonetheless. Since you are going to be hanging around the UT campus anyway, the Harry Ransom Center has some very rare and interesting things: www.hrc.utexas.edu/
