You knew it was coming... now they want to charge you to carry on your baggage!.....Jake ************************ Spirit Airlines to charge for carry-on bags to pull down faresNEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- In a bold move, low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines said Tuesday it would be the first carrier to charge for carry-on luggage, the latest step in de-bundling products and services traditionally included in the price of a ticket. The Miramar, Fla., airline said the new policy would help reduce its fares further. The company also raised its fee for a second check-on bag. "Bring less; pay less. It's simple," said Chief Operating Officer Ken McKenzie in a statement. For flights on or after August 1, Spirit said it will charge passengers $45 for a carry-on bag, or $30 if they register the bag ahead of time either on line or on the phone. Members of the airline's $9 Club Fare will be charged $20. Passengers are allowed just one carry-on bag. Spirit raised its second check-bag fee to $45 from $25 when checked in at the airport. The first check-bag fee is held at $25. "The real question is will other airlines follow," said airfarewatchdog.com founder George Hobica. more: www.marketwatch.com/story/spirit-airlines-to-charge-for-carry-on-bags-2010-04-06

I am beginning to wonder if bribery at check in might be a cheaper way to go. A strategically place Ben Franklin might end up being cheaper than paying the fees.

Soon it will be cheaper to buy the clothing and toiletries you need at your destination than the baggage fees.

Actually I don't consider the fee for carry on baggage to be a bad diea. Some people over do it.

Dont bet that this will be the last word on Carry on Fees. After the mindless drones accept the inevitability of the fee, next will be a surcharge to place you carry on in prime overhead real estate (the first 2 overhead bins on entering the plane or within two rows of your seat). Which will mean that you will have to reserve your bin assignment ahead of time, probably after selecting your seat... or maybe you might want to select you carry-on bin location first THEN select your seat (have to get your priorities straight).

MARKETING IDEA::: FAT BAGS. Someone who weighs 300 pounds with no carry on luggage will pay less than someone weighing 150 pounds and a 20 pound carry on. A "Fat Bag" would be designed to strap around your waist and look like a beer gut, but in fact will be a handy place to store your carry ons in flight.
Face it security wont give a damn about what your carry on looks like, just so long as they inspect it. After going through security, you simply wrap the "Fat Bag" around your waist, adjust the contents for comfort, and wham bam thank you mam, youre just another 300 pounder trying to squeeze into a coach class seat.

But then there'll be another charge for the seat belt extender.

Actually I don't consider the fee for carry on baggage to be a bad diea. Some people over do it. I agree -- not only have I seen people place into the overhead bin items that are a little too large (or too many items), but also, they will place it in such a way as their item takes up so much room that it becomes difficult to stuff your own carry-on in the same bin. I've gotten yelled at by passengers who told me to "be more careful" because they apparently had fragile items in their carry-on. You gotta be kiddin' me with that shit!

I have a flight coming up on Spirit where I have a reservation, but no seat assignment. Choosing a seat on their website at the time of booking was $20 extra! I skipped it. They can stick me wherever they want me and I'll keep the double sawbuck.......Jake

This is the strategy some airlines use to appear at the top of the results list on a search engine for those travel Web sites when you search by cheapest fare -- they lop of all of the things other airlines include in their prices, then charge you extra for the "convenience".

Exactly true. And since there are usually several dozen flights all on the first page of search results with the same exact fare, they need to be pretty aggressive to get onto that first page.

I've gotten yelled at by passengers who told me to "be more careful" because they apparently had fragile items in their carry-on. You gotta be kiddin' me with that shit! I watched two guy on a flight back from Seattle in 08 almost get into a flight becasue the one asshole put two large cowboy hats in the bin. The other guy just kind of threw his carry on bag in there and smashed them. The fight was almost on. I was going to root for the guy with bag because the other guy and his wife were just first place asses. Joe

I feel that all bags should be check in. (Hell they should charge $75.00 for each carry on) There should be nothing more than a small bag allowed. They should make the security machines a certain size. If the bag don't fit you have got to check it in. If you don't like it fuck you, don't fly. Take a train, bus, or drive.
There is nothing in the Constitution that say you have the right to bring a carry-on luggage on a plane the size of a small house.

Joe, I tend to agree, but there is a counter-argument: checking a bag takes you extra time on both ends of the flight, and if you have a connection (or even if you don't) there is a decent chance they will LOSE your fucking bag........Jake

Only once have I had my luggage completely lost.(and it still is to this day)It was with a connection. We traveled from Shreveport, LA to Dallas then to San Francisco. If time is an issue with people, then they should not mind paying the fee for a carry-on.

I thought I was joking about the pay toilets - just heard on the news that Ryan Air is working with Boeing to install pay toilets on its planes. $1.50 or shit yourself. For someone like Beeb who is toilet-centric, this could really add up.

In fact, that's their new advertising slogan. FWIW, I don't see why it has to be an "either/or" situation. BTW, isn't Ryan Air the company that's also considering taking seats out of planes for short flights so they can squeeze more people onto the plane?
