Winter Games Opening Ceremony this evening, first time they have been held indoors... good thing to, the forecast is for rain.
Weather has been the big issue leading up to the games, its been so warm that many events are going to be delayed, despite the fact that theyve been trucking in snow for weeks.
Look for Canada to win a LOT of medals this time around. US not so much.

We always enjoy the winter Olympics and tonight we'll be watching the ceremonies. Maybe someday we'll travel to one.

Went to the '88 games in Calgary. It was a great time, best to watch is the bobsledding (that was the year of the Jamaican bobsled team, saw them walk down to the finish line). You get the best view of them over the course on TV, but DAMN until you watch them at the rail go by you have no idea just how fast they are going!! Ski jumping is also impressive to watch.
I dont get into the new games that they have introduced in the past few year, simply because they are all based on subjective scoring... great to watch, totally bogus for picking a "winner".
Had the chance in Calgary to pick up a genuine CCCP hockey jersey, it was $200, I thought that was a bit more than I wanted to spend at the time... been kicking myself every since the Soviet Union broke up, '88 was the last year they appeared in the Winter Games.

Why? It's a brief moment when the world shares athletic camaraderie and gets a break from tense political affairs.

And by the way, the reason I got a 7.8 was for the poor landing when coming out of the triple-axle. I missed the bed entirely.
The high-five was from one of the medics that carried me away.

Womens Hockey.. outside of the US, Canada, and Sweden there is, well not a whole lot of competition out there. Last night Canada 18 Slovakia 0. Sounds bad, but to get into the Olympics, Slovenia beat Bulgaria 82-0. yep thats a hockey score
"Down 77-0 with three minutes to go, Bulgaria put in its backup goaltender, who promptly let in another five goals on five shots in just 1:25 of playing time. The game's final shots on goal were 139-0. Slovakia had 12 players record hat tricks, including one 10-goal scorer, one nine-goal scorer and four others with eight."
OTOH- The Bulgarian goalie had a 57 save game, by most standards a heroic effort

The lesson to be learned here is that I could probably score with Slovakian and Bulgarian chicks.

Yep I will probably be streaming it to my computer. The next two weeks for me are so busy there is no point in DVRing it, I wont be able to watch it until well into March. I may look in on the Canadian feed, there games will probably be more interesting (not to mention better coverage, Canadian media has curling events on just about every weekend from December through February, so better more knowledgeable commentary).

After watching short track speed skating and the snowboard cross events closely, I just cant get enthusiastic about them. I find the short track exciting, but the results (as with the snowboard cross) of dubious value. One douche bag falling down can take out half the field, including, potentially, the best individual. Seems like a recipe for "taking a fall" bribery, and I bet that we a scandal to that effect before too long.
