The buttons on my 7 year old cell phone have been failing so I'm onto the new Palm Pre.
I feel very modern even if the touch screen is a pain in the balls.

The best part of the PDA is it's web capability and decent screen. I can quickly launch web sites as fast as my home p.c. and stream Google Finance for instance. I took the Simply Expensive Everything Package from Sprint for it's unlimited data but as good as it is with the web it lacks as a phone. The touch screen dialing seems slow to me and the speakerphone is to low and tinny sounding.
I have my business on a Google calendar so it's nice to see exactly whats happening at anytime.

As long as being tracked doesn't bother you... Is your Palm Pre spying on you?...Palm is gathering users' GPS information, along with data on every app used, and for how long you used it. This information gets uploaded to Palm on a daily basis... ...Palm's terms does say it has the right to "collect, store, access, disclose, transmit, process, and otherwise use your Registration Data, account or Device information... The terms also note that Palm can disclose "any information" to law enforcement authorities, so keep that in mind if you're on the run from the law.

The app's tell you information is being collected. Some of the snooping I don't mind but if I wanted to check on Hedo prices or scan other adult oriented material I would. Yesterday while at a town park at the edge of the Hudson, I viewed "Guests" post so I turned on the "auto-locate" and GPS (generally I leave that off for battery life) to see how accurate it is. The map (provided by google) had me in the middle of the Hudson River missing by a half mile. I tried again from home and it temporarily became worse being off by 7 miles as the crow flies and a 24 miles by car. (have to loop around to the nearest bridge by West Point) There's no question about the phone and it's ability to collect and transmit information, Sprint can erase your data for you if it gets lost or stolen. The phone also backs-up and checks for updates automatically everyday and I suspect those are involved in data collection. FYI: 1) the battery life is inadequate. 2) NASCAR and NFL websites are embedded into the program "launcher" and are ridiculous icons to have on a limited size screen for a business tool Modified to add: when I was home and the GPS was wrong it had me in the center of a rail yard across the river.

Having a NASCAR icon hardwired onto any screen would be a non-starter for me

When you tap open NASCAR, pictures of race drivers fill the screen.

I think the "locator" feature depends on the density of your location. My G1 phone locates me to the correct part of the correct block, even without GPS turned on. But I'm in a neighborhood extremely packed with cell towers, so it has lots of data to go on. Gary, try it next time you are in Manhattan and see how well it does.
Re: battery life, I downloaded an app that lets you make "power profile" icons. I created a "browsing" icon which turns on WiFi, 3G, etc., which I tap when I want to use the browser, and a "phone" icon which turns off power to everything but the phone. Now the battery lasts all day.

Jake,
Location Services on the Pre are comprised of two settings, 1 for auto locate and 1 for GPS. I'm not sure there is a difference! But, when the GPS is turned on as opposed to only the auto locate the accuracy is spot on.
The Pre is easy to use but I wish it was more flexible and had a stronger battery. I keep the GPS turned off and several settings on low to help save energy.

Two days ago the Pre posted two additional times repeating the original post. This is a test to see if it does it again.

Today it only did it one additional time. I don't know why it does this, it doesn't send e-mails in double or triple.
I'm liking it more and more, it's easy to use. The biggest short coming is the phone speaker and dialer.
