Anyone try this yet? After the Vista disaster, I'm a bit leery of trying it, lest I fuck up my computer once again. Eh??

Im not going to be on the foreskin of science on this one Bob. Even though Windows 7 is more like a Vista SP than a whole new version and everyone is giving glowing reports (werent they all with Vista?), Im taking the "wait and see" stance here.
Still running on XP here, with a separate partition running Windows 2000 for heavy computations. I HOPE that Windows 7 runs as advertised, then it will be worth the upgrade... but not until then

I can only tell you what I have read. They say if you are going from Vista to Win7 that the upgrade is not that difficult.
On the other hand if you are going from XP to 7 it is best described as a cluster fuck of epic proportion. In fact I think the Microsoft press release uses that exact terminology. They don't even describe it as an upgrade but rather say that the only way to make the switch is to wipe the hard drive clean and start from scratch.
I have even read that some are suggesting that if you are sitting on older hardware with XP it might be smarter to just buy new with Win7.
Before I make my final decision I am waiting for the announcement of the Cash for XP program from Washington.

On the Cash for XP front.. I believe that is in the works, in committee... but it currently requires installation of Linux
Edited: BTW I have heard "cluster fuck of epic proportion" used in the computer sciences but it was last used in its original context when a 4 foot long tray of punch card program code was "randomized" by spilling all over the card reader room floor.

I have been running Windows 7 since early closed beta, I will tell you that it is a great OS. Microsoft finally got something right. I have it installed on a couple of machines, one of them is quite old (3 years, that is OLD for a PC) It runs beautiful, it isn't near the resource hog that Vista is. My main gripe with Vista is the simple fact that it is such a resource hog. I ran Vista for quite a while and never had any major issues with it.

I've tried Windows 7, and I've been a Vista 64 and 32 user since early on.
Windows 7 is fine. The problem with Vista was the lack of drivers, since they drastically modified the mechanism for drivers from XP to Vista.
Windows 7 uses the same driver model as Vista, and Vista has already paid the price PR wise, so I think Windows 7 will be a fine. I wouldn't install it week one, unless you are an early adopter... but within the first month your probably safe.
