My cell phone company offered me a great deal: for an extra $10 a month, I could have unlimited calling within the US. Naturally, I signed up for it.
Now my dilemma is, do I keep my land line? I have absolutely no need to ever use it. The only arguments in its favor are: a) there's an extension in every room of the house; very convenient b) lots of business contacts have that number c) 911 emergency calls work much better from a land line, because they automatically know where you are.
Anyone else made the decision to cut the cord? Any pros or cons?

Can they port your existing phone number over to the cell line? If they can do that you essentially keep your old number and it would then seem like a no brainer to me.

Ive pondered that for quite some time now. My situation is a bit different of course. I am at the fringe of the tower's reception, so my signal is questionable in certain areas of the house (my computer kicks up enough interference to disconnect a cell connection). Also, when the power goes out (many times a year) cell service can go down too, but not the land line.
Have not cut the land line, but I have a twitchy hand with a knife in it.
Edited: Another consideration, make the land line "business only" then youve got a business expense deduction.

I chose to be without a landline for a while. To be honest, I didn't like it much. Apparently I *really* dislike being available to the whole wide world on a 24x7 basis. In the end I decided it was better to use the cellphone for friends and emergencies, and allow the landline to pick up the rest of the slack for me (things like, oh, the library calling to tell me the books I requested were in, or reference calls for friends and their new employment, or to give people I have just met who I think might be friends in the long run but aren't there yet) For me, the peace of mind was worth the extra $. But then again, I'm a much bigger privacy freak than you are, and not nearly as penny conscious Zilla (just adding to the data so you can make a better decision based on more than the spreadsheet)

Thanks, folks; lots of good insights here. I already deduct the cell phone costs as a business expense, which it mostly is. But I might lose that ability if this is the only phone line I have!
